Cats were bred/made to be self sufficient and need very little help. release them and they catch pests without help.

Around here it would probably depend on how good your lawyer was, the time of day and if he was on your property.
If it was night and he was on your property with a weapon killing your animal and you are the one telling the story my guess it is would be ruled self defense. If it was in your fenced back yard anytime of day doing that it's probably going to be ruled as valid self defense.

Don't let yours outside, like a human once they taste freedom they are never the same. Our 2 are out about 18 hours a day in good weather, used to bring quit a few mice to the patio from the neighbors barn/fields. Not as much anymore.
Nothing funnier than opening the door first snow storm, and watching them run full speed until about 3 ft outside, as they try and make a u-turn I shut the door on their ass. Wife lets them in to soon if you ask me. They will press their bodies against the door in an attempt to get heat (if they are out awhile). Don't give me no shit we are talk low 30's-high 20's I am fine and don't have a fur coat. Driving around I don't see cat/dog-icles anywhere so they are good. If gets into the teens they won't get with in 5 ft of the door. They are smarter than you would think.

Cats keep the rodents at bay. Then dogs keep the cat population at bay, then humans keep the dog population in check.

I have 2 indoor cats...2 dogs as well (pit and lab puppy). All are rescues and are the best pets I have had. My wife likes both dogs and cats but I am more of a cat person.

I have no use....well a complete and utter dislike of people that advocate harming a dog or cat.

I'm not a cat person, but killing cats for no reason other than out of meanness is creepy. I understand people not wanting feral cats or the neighbor's cat using their garden as a liter box, or wanting to prevent cats from killing birds in their yards, but killing them just because you want to kill something is indicative of a much deeper problem. Keep cats on their own property and their shouldn't be an issue.

Like I said, I'm not a cat person, but I do believe that all animals are deserving of a modicum of respect and decent treatment... That doesn't mean I'm against hunting, or killing that which bothers livestock, destroys property or are otherwise a nuisance. It is the killing just out of meanness or blood lust that is messed up.

I do not condone killing cats unless they are feral and you have too many around. Barn cats.
I USED to love cats until I was taking care of, {food, water, shit boxes, etc.}, my best friends Old Ladies cats while they were on vacation, when I needed to move one of the Toms out of his room so I could clean it up, and he wasn't quite ready to move, apparently,to the room across the hall so I could do the clean up.
I had been around this cat for years and talked to him and petted him before I tried to move him, picked him up and handled him before the move to make sure he was good with it, going to a cleaned out room and everything was GTG as far as I could tell.
I had him in hand, petting and talking with him, purring until I reached out for the door knob and everything was OK until I reached for the doorknob, then ALL HELL broke loose.
The cocksucker bit me on my arm and hand and he had 20 claws on each paw that were going around at about 10,000 RPM.
I was tore up to say the least.
I did not let go as the damage had been done but did throw him against the far wall as hard as I could to dislodge the teeth and claws and the only way I knew he was alive was that his claws were trying to gain traction on the far wall as he slid down it.

Fast Forward--A trip to the ER as infection was setting in, Cat Scratch&Bite Fever were setting in and had a good hold on me.
Several trips to the ER and Dr. for IV antibiotics and in office drainage of the wounds and I was not gaining on the infection.

I ended up in the hospital for surgery where my Dr. told me,"I will clean this out as best I can but if it doesn't work I will have to amputate your lower arm." Oh Fuck, but I was hurting.

I still have my arm but it is kind of fucked up from the ordeal.

My advice to EVERYBODY is, If you get bit by a cat, Do not pass GO, do not collect $200, just take off to the ER right Goddamn NOW. Those cocksuckers have anaerobic shit in their mouths that WILL Fuck you up.
I still like cats and have a few feline friends but,--- I approach with caution and don't let them too close to me. FM
I was off from work for 5 weeks with this and swallowed pain pills like they were grapes with little results.
That hurt more than getting shot in the leg by an AK.
