Rifle Scopes Set screws on Falcon Menace turrets: how tight?

I'm finally getting around to putting the replacement turrets on my Falcon Menace, and just wanted to know how tight to make the three set screws on each turret. I don't have access to a torque wrench, so would 1/4 turn after contact make sense? I'm assuming that they will mar the spindles, but it doesn't matter at this point, correct?

Thanks for any info.

They felt pretty fragile to me, so I just snugged them at first... then the elevation knob came loose during the middle of a shoot. After that I cranked on them. Mine didn't strip.

Anyone having issues with the turret knobs climbing as you try and secure the set screws?

I notice my elevation knob had slid down far enough I couldn't see my index post so I decided to back the set screws out a bit and raise the cap. Well everytime my knob just keeps climbing off.

The only way I get it to secure is setting the knob really low, covering the index post again.

Well, I was out with my Falcon yesterday and I'm finding that the zero might be changing slightly when I tighten down the three set screws on the turret. I'm going to need another range session to explore this more.

Has anyone done any tests to see if the POI changes after playing with the elevation or windage? If you go up 3 or 4 mils, does the bullet track where it should? Does it come back down to zero properly? (I didn't get that far at my last range session)

Re: Set screws on Falcon Menace turrets: how tight?

I had a similiar problem in Sniper School but only when moving from much longer ranges back down to my zero. After a 600 yard session when I was about 70 clicks up and 14 right, I went back to zero for other drills and found I was off about 1 1/2 inch down and about 1/2 inch to the right. This happened during at least two different long range back to zero range relays. Not enough to throw yourself totally off of an operational shot, but damn sure enough to make you think twice about the purchase. Being that far off shouldn't happen when with a $300 scope let alone a $400 scope like the Falcon. That's why I'm looking at upgrading. Mine is the 4X14X44 FFP. Which Menace do you have?

That exact one.

Same here, pretty tight with the small end of allen.

When my 4-14 was new, the reticle would slowly settle when dialing down from say 1000yds to 400 or whatever. After use in 90+ temps, it was all better and has been good ever since, even in cold weather now. Maybe it was heavy grease in the internal gizmo's.

Just fyi, one of the tips I learned on here when researching the falcon's was that the turret caps needed to be removed and have the super heavy grease cleaned off and use something else to very lightly lube. I did this to mine and it made a distinct difference in feel of the clicks.

On mine it seems that where my 100yd zero is for the windage when ever I tried to tighten down the cap at zero it wanted to shift about half a mark. I never could get it exactly on the zero mark. I did not have that issue with the elevation.
