Gunsmithing shelin barrel (rachet 4 grove)

Re: shelin barrel (rachet 4 grove)

Did a side by side comp with their standard 1:8 and ratchet 1:8 several years back. Caliber was 22-250 and bullet used was Sierra 80 grain at 3100fps.
Found that there's not a real advantage to the ratchet until you put some distance on things. At 700+ yards you'll start to see some advantage in windage deflection and a bit less required elevation for the distance. This becomes more appearent as you get to 900+ yards. Cleaning is the same, loading is the same.

how would ratcheted rifling prove advantageous for wind drift?

I can only speculate that the indentations left on the bullet from ratchet rifling would create less air resistance resulting in better wind deflection and less elevation to the same point. That is only speculation though.
