What the general thought on using chrome Molly barrels for hunting work? You can get Shilen rem varmint contour chrome moly barrels for about 160 bucks. That sounds pretty good. I figured a quick coat of alumahyde or duracoat and your off. I understand that the chrome Molly barrels take a bit longer to brake in but thats not a huge deal to me. I dont mind cleaning my rifles. I have also herd that chrome Molly is harder than stainless. If this is a fact wouldnt a chrome Molly barrel last longer in a 22-250Ai or any other hard on the throat chambering? Just looking for some education here is all. Thanks lee

Re: shilen chrome moly barrels????

I have 2, they shoot great, and I have no complaints on them. I have not seen the "excessive fouling" that you're mentioning. Several hundred rounds at a time go through the 6m-223 bolt gun before I clean it and it cleans up in minutes.

Re: shilen chrome moly barrels????

I think the Shilen CM's varmint contours are one of the best deals out there. I've used two of them now, and they both shoot under an inch; the .223 shoots .25 inch at 100. I have my 'smith bead blast them, then I lay on a coat of Break Free for about a week; reapplying it every day and I get a nice metal gray finish once they are cured......

I had one on a 22-243. It was a great barrel and I would buy another any time. Very accurate and cleaned easily.

have a CM barrel on my 6.5 creedmoor-local smith bead blasted it and then painted-works well: accurate and cleans quickly-I followed wn roscoe's web pages recs on break in
