Hey guys, my buddy's 18.5" bbl shotgun is up here at my house in Washington state and he wants me to ship it to him in California. Since he already owns the gun do I still have to ship it to an FFL dealer in CA, or is it LEGAL to ship it straight to his house?

The main reason I ask is because it would seem very lame for him to have to pay an FFL transfer for a gun that he already owns.

thanks in advance!

Re: shipping a gun in mail (help please)

I'll spare you the insult to your intelligence, and tell you YES! you absolutely can NOT send a firearm to anyone unless that person holds a FFL or you yourself hold one..

Re: shipping a gun in mail (help please)

Thanks. Im not insulted because thats what I already told my buddy before this post, but I know I dont know everything in the world (yet ;D) so I figured I'd just make sure before shipping it to an FFL.

Re: shipping a gun in mail (help please)

You can ship a rifle or shotgun to yourself at another address in another state, and some states allow shipping to another person within state lines. In your case is has to go to an FFL.

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.
