About to ship a $1000 scope. What shipping method have you gentleman had best luck with and do you think it’s necessary to buy insurance?

Anyone had to claim insurance before and how was the process?

TIA

I do, but at this point I have spent enough on insurance to have lost a scope and never used it.
You'll most likely come out better self-insuring. That's how insurance works.

You are correct on that.

However...

I almost Never see anyone actually setting that money they save on insurance aside to cover the losses when something big does get lost.

We deal with resellers all the time that want us to ship on their own UPS / FedEx or such accounts and demand that we don't insure it because they have their own insurance cover or have a 3rd party insurance. We flatly refuse because in a quarter century of doing shipping to resellers, we have never once had a reseller that claimed "their own insurance," actually honestly just accept it if the carrier lost or damaged the item being shipped to them.

EVERY single time they demanded we make it right on their cost or they would make false claims to their bank or credit card company for fraud etc.

They get amazingly creative about it.

Also we have found that resellers were using that also as their excuse when they shipped it from their end to another customer without insurance and it got damaged, or they dropped / damaged things in house, trying to claim that it was damaged in shipping. (Usually busted when we ask for a picture of the shipping box and they say something like, "our policy is to destroy all the boxes immediately", right.

So the long and short is, YES self insuring will save you lots of money over the long run.
However that means you actually have to set aside funds to cover the event because it WILL eventually happen no matter what carrier you use.
And NEVER trust someone else claiming that they don't need to pay for insurance because they will take care of it.

I would say unless you actually have the funds set aside to self insure and are able to write off the cost of the loss, no sweat.
BUY insurance and get a signature required for delivery.

Even if the buyer claims they are good with not being insured because they don't want to pay for it. DON'T do it.
If it doesn't get to them, you can bet your bottom dollar they will be on here whining to the mods and demanding you give them a full refund or get banned and be whining to any payment processor about not getting it. They won't care that you have proof they told you in writing they didn't want insurance.

If you have to claim the insurance, it's going to be a bit of a real pain in the ass and nothing is going to happen fast. Make sure you have all your original receipts from when you purchased the scope, as well as pictures and everything, pictures of the box and how you packed will help too.

Most likely the buyer would demand you refund them right away and then you'll just be out the money and scope until you manage to hash things out with the insurance company and they run out of excuses or reasons not to pay.

I haven't lost anything yet, but twice the USPS has paid out claims for items that were damaged during shipping (non-firearms things that were properly packaged). In both cases, the claims process was simple, straightforward, and hassle-free. So yeah, I buy insurance.

I think its funny you can pay a shipper to deliver an item. But you have to pay them protection money in case they loose or break it.

All shippers do that as a first course of business to protect themselves from liability, if they didn't, it would very quickly become unprofitable to ship things.
Most generally have a policy of $0 to $100 depending on the service for what they will cover and if you want any more than that, you have to pay for the insurance.

Absolutely! Just went through this with UPS with a purchase on a great deal on this site. The item made it to the UPS hub just 10 mins from my home a month ago. 2 weeks go by and it hasnt moved. Myself and the seller put in claims. I followed up and personally went to the UPS facility it was last scanned at. UPS workers were of no help and told me to call the 1-800 number. A month later, UPS deemed it lost. Seller refunded me. No insurance on it, so he’s out the money and the item.

Just remember that the shipping contract is between the seller and the shipper. As the seller, the option to buy insurance at time of shipment is on you, not the buyer. Read up on the shipper’s website and understand clearly what you’re entitled to or not entitled to if you ship without insurance. I read UPS policies after the fact and it was crystal clear on shipping without insurance

Insure unless you want to eat the cost twice... I have had to claim on a firearm before. Trigger came completely broken. It was a process but got the money.

I had friends who growing up worked at FedEx/USPS, however you think they are treating your package it's worse.... There's nothing gentle about it, and that's not getting into the theft issue.

I always purchase the insurance and signature required.

I shipped a barrel to a buyer from here at the end of june. It finally got to him mid August. 6 weeks. Wtf.

USPS Priority, Insured. I've akways sent packages by Priority mail to someone. No issue.

I do have problems with my packages getting lost, being mailed to me from vendors. Lost, gone, never got it. Seller sent me a replacement.

Always get insurance.
