I have been looking into both, but dont really know enough to decide yet. Anyone have any real life experience with either or both? Any help would be great, I just feel kinda lost with it. Normally Id just throw down the cash and try for myself, but anything worth trying is pricy.

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

My personal opinion is to go with a tripod. I don't see a benefit to running the shooting sticks over the tripod, but I can see a benefit to run the shooting sticks in conjunction with the tripod.

I'm using the large tripod from Precision Rifle Solutions and loving every minute of it. When not used for a rifle support I use it for binos/LRF with their universal optics mount.

Here's a few pics from practicing and at a recent match.

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

Some of the shooting sticks I have looked at are basically a giant bipod thats not attached to the rifle. But Im really leaning on the tripod.

Id be using it for matches mostly, and it is by far more stable then the sticks.

Im mostly trying to see if its worth spending the money, or just stick with a standard bipod. I have never used anything but sandbags, ruck, or a bipod as a shooting surface. Just trying to learn.

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

If you have the setup time, tripod in front and sticks under the butt is almost like shooting prone or off of a bench. Setup is fast with practice.

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

used both in the field for hunting, mostly deer in southern california......shooting sticks have worked fine for shots out to 5-600yards beyond you'll be thankful for a rigid mount of a tripod

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

Like magnum said if time permits tripod with a larue manfroto tripod adapter and shooting sticks are nice. I carry tripod and stony point sticks in my pack for every match. Sometimes time does not permit the use of either.

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

How much stuff do you want to carry around? I'm sure a tripod is more stable, but for hunting, sticks are faster, lighter weight, and cheaper. Just my 2 cents

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

I use both as well. Shooting sticks are 3 dowell rods (3 ft long) tied together about 8 inches from the top. Works kind of like a tripod without as much stability. They are a lot faster to set up and a whole lot easier to carry if you are covering a lot of ground. That said I have at times just had the sticks and wished for the tripod, but have never had the tripod and wished I had the sticks instead.

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

Simple Bipod Shooting sticks also works great for a hiking stick if you put on some miles hunting, I know its helped me over the years, at least helped my knees =)

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

If I am hiking or need to be mobile in a hurry then it is the sticks. If I am sitting still for a while or don't need to move much then I am gonna use the tripod.

GSR,

I did something similar, but more "bubba tech". I just took a bunny ear bag and used self adhesive industrial Velcro tape on the bottom of the bag, and corresponding tape on a steel plate, D&T'ed for 1/4-20. The plate stays mounted to the camera adapter and in the tripod, the bag ends up in the pack when hiking into an area. If need be, the bag can be left on the plate, held by the velcro, when leaving.

Seemed to work for me as an inexpensive "cheater"...

Not bad, not bad at all...

I've been thinking...I'm considering trying to make an adjustable cradle, like on regular rest....but am unsure how i'll go about it really...

I do know that my bag will be here before I get back from the beach, so I'm going to source a piece of steel tomorrow... I'll probably cut 2 pieces...drill/tap one ONLY and with the other counter sink in a rounded off nut or piece of thicker walled pipe/tube...the run a drill/tap through both to give some additional threaded surface without having to go to a real thick peice of stock..

Re: Shooting sticks vs. Tripod

I like the sticks for hunting as they are so fast. To adjust the hight, just lift up and swing out one side until you have it right. Takes seconds. Pretty tough to beat the tripod setup mentioned above for more static locations.
