Short ar....somthing i can live without

My 10.5" 5.56 is probably the last rifle I would ever part with. It's my shtf rifle. There is nothing it does not do well enough.

I used to hate the idea of short ARs until I tried one suppressed... With the suppressor, they make some sense for your average urban fantasy.

Really it depends on your use cases. Im comfortable going in and out of vehicles/tractors with 18" barrels... well now with my suppressor collection, I really like the idea of losing some barrel to stay around that original overall length but suppressed.

My friends back in Illinois running brakes on their 10.3" setups are Neanderthals. Spent most my life there so I know their struggle...but fuck. That noise sucks

Similar to New Jersey. Took a long-range rifle course in central PA a few years back. I made sure I placed a 'friend' between myself and a NJ guy shooting a SCAR-17 with a muzzle brake. I think it took my friend a couple of years to forgive me for that...

Was in a carbine class some years back. 15% had cans, 25% brakes, 60% flash hiders. Instructor put all the flash hider people in relay1, and on relay 2 gave the can people the far left and the brake people on the far right (with a large space in between).

I have a 14.5" pinned in 9 mm...just to try it..
It chronographs slower than the preferred 16" by a fair amount but only 1.5" shorter.

For me the pinned 14.5 ain't worth the trouble, I hardly ever use it.
The 16" is perfect for 9mm and it's still gaining speed, cause I chronograph the 10.5, 14.5, & 16" in 9mm.
Then disassembled the 10.5" for good, only a few ounces in weight, and you get higher velocities, better accuracy, and greater shoot ability.
The cool factor of short AR barrels wore off quickly for me, as not practical.
That's true across all calibers...nothing shorter than 16" for me...
I forgot I did have a 5.5" 9mm but gave that barrel away right after I tried it..been there.

Am I reading this right? You're saying that you're getting 2600 fps out of a 9mm PCC by virtue of running a 16" barrel. Those velocity numbers in that pic look more like 350 Legend numbers, or even heavy 5.56, but I doubt you're getting those numbers out of a 9mm.

In my experience, going from a 5" barrel to a 16" barrel might get you 200 fps.

I run a 5" 9mm with a YHM R9. It's very compact, quiet and I dont have to worry about subs going super sonic.

I run a 5" 9mm with a YHM R9. It's very compact, quiet and I dont have to worry about subs going super sonic.

Dip the case in a pan full of powder. Use a butter knife to scrape the top flat. Cram a bullet down on top…

But I never shot any barrel shorter than 16" as my own, did shoot a 10.5" with can for several rounds, standing. Seemed handy lengthwise but it had Eotech rds, magnifier, laser device and didn't feel handy weight wise.

They are super handy length wise. Imagine all of that stuff hanging on the end of a 16” barrel. There is a weight savings but comparing a fully kitted out SBR with basic 16” with only an optic isn’t a fair comparison.

Taking a 3 night training class with TNVC it becomes super apparent really quick that an SBR is far handier than a 16” with that same amount of stuff hanging on the end of the rail.

As has been said in this thread, it all comes down to need/plan for that rifle. If I lived somewhere I couldn't have a suppressor, I wouldn't have a need for an SBR either. I very, very rarely shoot any rifle unsuppressed, but I will never shoot any of my SBRs unsuppressed. Even the 9mm PCCs. If I wasn't playing in the dark with NODs and IR lasers/lights, I'm not sure I would have any SBRs either.
