Similar to New Jersey. Took a long-range rifle course in central PA a few years back. I made sure I placed a 'friend' between myself and a NJ guy shooting a SCAR-17 with a muzzle brake. I think it took my friend a couple of years to forgive me for that...
Was in a carbine class some years back. 15% had cans, 25% brakes, 60% flash hiders. Instructor put all the flash hider people in relay1, and on relay 2 gave the can people the far left and the brake people on the far right (with a large space in between).

Am I reading this right? You're saying that you're getting 2600 fps out of a 9mm PCC by virtue of running a 16" barrel. Those velocity numbers in that pic look more like 350 Legend numbers, or even heavy 5.56, but I doubt you're getting those numbers out of a 9mm.
In my experience, going from a 5" barrel to a 16" barrel might get you 200 fps.
I run a 5" 9mm with a YHM R9. It's very compact, quiet and I dont have to worry about subs going super sonic.
Every time I work with my Seekins Havak Hit, then switch to a 16" barrel AR, it doesn't feel like I'd ever want/need anything shorter. But I never shot any barrel shorter than 16" as my own, did shoot a 10.5" with can for several rounds, standing. Seemed handy lengthwise but it had Eotech rds, magnifier, laser device and didn't feel handy weight wise.
They are super handy length wise. Imagine all of that stuff hanging on the end of a 16” barrel. There is a weight savings but comparing a fully kitted out SBR with basic 16” with only an optic isn’t a fair comparison.
Taking a 3 night training class with TNVC it becomes super apparent really quick that an SBR is far handier than a 16” with that same amount of stuff hanging on the end of the rail.
As has been said in this thread, it all comes down to need/plan for that rifle. If I lived somewhere I couldn't have a suppressor, I wouldn't have a need for an SBR either. I very, very rarely shoot any rifle unsuppressed, but I will never shoot any of my SBRs unsuppressed. Even the 9mm PCCs. If I wasn't playing in the dark with NODs and IR lasers/lights, I'm not sure I would have any SBRs either.

I hear you. On primary distance to target alone, I understand the SBR for your situation. No need for the free speed of extra barrel length. And I've never used NVD/lasers which explains why the handiness of length, including the weight of extra devices, is important.
This reminded me of something.
RAIL length!
Even maxing out a 10.whatever with a 9-9.5" rail can get crowded real quick with enablers (light, laser, switches) and what not.
The shortest I'm willing to go at this point is an 11.5" rail is short as I would wish to go without cause would be 12.5" barrel. While I'm not familiar with some of the Hux and current flow through stuff, used to be back in the day shorter barrels needed longer cans for the same effect and one could get away with a Mini on a 14.5 and ultimately the same overall system length if you wanted the 12.5 with the same reduction.
But back to the rail thing...
Now it's become a thing where whatever barrel length, you get a rail thats - 0.25". While I'm all for protecting gas blocks and going for that seamless look with minimal exposed barrel IF you have a can....can we agree that this shit is kinda outta hand.
15+" rails on 16" guns; 17+" rails on 18" guns aren't doing anyone any favors with their fucking enablers. I don't need my fucking light/laser coming into my FOV at mid-level magnification.
And getting in and out of vehicles is easier with an SBR.
And carrying in general. Hell yea, I want as small as I can go.
But when it comes to slinging HOT/fired guns. Shortys with a hot can and partial/no wrap have burned a few MFers and melted some Crye pants
Small price to pay for being able to wake up and remember those details in my opinion
In no way meaning to belittle your point but 99.95% of the time, the cans getting this hot are on the flat range and due to a lapse in judgement during a day of keeping that can hot.
One on top is the one I’d grab and go when the Hawaii five-o shirt goes on and boog kicks off. Have plenty of years on the basic same setup, comfortable with it, accuracy enough for anything I’d ever need. When I’m running around in flip flops clappin blue hairs it’d be the one I’d go with
To me having a 10.5" unsuppressed you may have fire without ear pro, for home defense or what have you, is like having a firearm that will amputate the tip of your pinky when you fire it. You can use it to save your life but it's going to be distracting, extremely uncomfortable, and cause you permanent damage. Better than getting shot or stabbed but still shitty.
Hell man...EVERYTHING fired inside sucks. I have partial hearing loss from a 12ga less lethal that when fired outdoors is akin to a .22lr...but fired inside will leave you ringing.
Often wondered if "in for a penny, in for a pound" is at play. Mo louder, mo better (and leave your ear pro hanging on the rifle).
