As I understand this terminology, it is just a bulky way of saying a piston action rifle rather than gas operating system. Correct?

Some platforms allow you to switch from piston to gas operation action for lower loads too as I understand it.

Sig Sauer has this spec for some of their ARs
"Short stroke pushrod operating system with 4 position gas valve"

Please correct me if I've got this wrong

Re: Short stroke pushrod operating system

Some folks like to be pretentious and tell you that "technically, DI guns ARE 'piston' operated"...and they are "technically" pretentious douche bags.

In op rod guns, there are short (HK 416, G36) and long (PWS, AK) stroke operations.

I'm thinking you're confusing adjustable gas regulators/switch blocks with something else. I don't know of many guns that go from DI to piston and back with the exception of the LMT MRP w/ a different barrel and bcg.

Re: Short stroke pushrod operating system

There are 3 operating systems for the AR.

Original is DI, gas/pressure goes up the gas block, through the gas tube in to the bolt carrier, this gas/pressure/expansion pushes the carrier back and unlocks the bolt.

Short stroke (Ruger SR556) gas goes up the gas block and pushes on a piston that slaps or short strokes the bolt carrier. the piston/op rod is spring loaded and returns to it's normal position without help of the bolt carrier because they are not physically connected. piston/op rod only moves a little maybe not even an inch.

Long stroke is (PWS or AK) same as short stroke except the op rod/piston is connected to the bolt carrier so the piston "pushes" on the carrier for its' entire stroke. Not a sharp slap on the carrier like a short stroke system.
