Been lurking for a bit here and decided to register as I need a bit of advice from the experts.

I have a Remington PSS in .308 that I use for work. This work entails culling deer via neck shots at ranges anywhere from 30 – 400 yards during the day and at night while shooting from tripods, vehicles, or blinds.

The 26” barrel is a bit unhandy in these confined locations so I’m thinking about shortening it to 22” (+/-) and installing a flash hider. Why add a flash hider? Well, I plan on eventually moving to night vision so a flash hider will help in these situations.

As it sits currently, the rifle will shoot one-hole groups at 100 yards with Hornady 168 gr. Amax if I do my part. She’s pretty darned accurate so, obviously, I am a little concerned that altering the barrel will negatively affect the accuracy of this barrel. A valid concern or am I simply being paranoid?

As far as the work is concerned, I do own a Grizzly 4003G lathe and have the mechanical ability to perform the work. However, I’d need to pick up some additional tooling so I may just sent the work out to someone who does this for a living.

My question to you guys is should I be concerned about negatively affecting the accuracy of this barrel with this change? I realize that the quality of the work will affect this but let’s assume that it’ll be spot on.

Whaddya think? Should I just leave well enough alone or go for it?

Oh, and before anyone mentions it, simply buying a new rifle is out of the question. This one is issued to me and already works as needed so there's no need to buy a new one.

Re: Shorten a Remy PSS Barrel?

Reducing your barrel length from 26" to 22" should have no negative impact on accuracy. In fact I saw a detailed article recently where folks were documenting improved accuracy by reducing the barrels from 26" all the way to 18". They attributed this to decreased barrel whip from the shorter, stiffer tube.

You will lose some velocity (I have measured 18-20 fps for each inch of barrel length reduced), but at the moderate ranges you are talking about this shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Shorten a Remy PSS Barrel?

I shortened my factory barrel from 26" to 22". Accuracy improved in my case. For your purposes why stop at 22? I would consider 20" or shorter. For your intended ranges, the slight velocity loss will not matter. If it is legal in your state, how about a can instead of a flash hider?

PSS shortened to 20"

Funny thing is I just shortened mine down to 20" with a Surefire muzzle break. Haven't shot it, but it's easier to maneuver and there are plenty on the hide using even shorter barrels for a 308. It's up to you. I went for it and very happy so far.

Sorry dog had to lay on her bed when I decided to take pictures.

PS: if this is your first time I'd recommend you don't cut it to 20" cut it to 21" crown and shoot to see if your a good gunsmith.

Re: Shorten a Remy PSS Barrel?

Thanks guys! I realize that I’ll lose a little velocity but it won’t matter at these ranges.

I think I’ll go ahead and get her done. Finding time to do it is going to be tough for a while but I’ll eventually get around to it. I think the shorter barrel will be a lot handier.

I’d LOVE to set this up for a can but, unfortunately, IL frowns upon those things. Even gov’t personnel can’t play. Don’t ask me why. Anyone want Chicago? We’re trying to give it away but IN or WI don’t want it.

We really need cans and NV for this detail but no one wants to do the legwork with the legislature to try and get it through. I guess they think waking folks up at night with lights and shooting is okay. Might be as we haven’t had many complaints over the years.

NOS – good idea to cut long and test. I might give it a go and see just how much I can screw this up. Live and learn, eh?

Re: Shorten a Remy PSS Barrel?

If that's the way you want to do it. I would send mine into a smith. They know what they are doing and I have no clue. That's why though.
