Should I go for it or not? Re: GAP M24

I've been kicking the idea around about getting a GAP M24 for a little while and I am still on the fence due to 2 things.

- My current setup is nice and I can shoot sub MOA easily with hand loads and it does not even have a custom barrel on it.

- I would need to sell my current rifle/optic to fund the new project and I am not sure if that will be a royal PITA or not. I would also have to kick in a bit of cash on the back-end as well.

Currently I am running a Remington 700 Milspec 5R with a Leupold Mark 4 M2 3.5-10 TMR, Leupold Mark 4 rings and Mark 4 base all in a HS Precision M24 stock. The round count is very low as I have been mainly into shooting my Mk12 Mod0 and my original K98 LSR sniper as of late.

When I did shoot it, it shot very well with my hand loads but I always saw myself wanting to upgrade this and that and then I started to think that I should just get a rifle with all the bells and whistles and be done with it as it may end up being cheaper in the long run as well as getting that one rifle, and that's the end of it.

I know GAP is extremely good at what they do and I'm not asking if their rifles are worth it. I'm mainly here to see if I should simply do this and why, or if this is just an act of futility with selling what I have for a 'nicer' GAP setup that will perform roughly the same.

What do you guys think? I've been kicking this around for a few weeks now.

I say do it! George built mine in '05 and its still driving tacks(i know i need to shoot it more and be 4 barrels deep in it)

Nice rifles.

Hard to say "no" to GAP.

ONly question is whether you shoot the Bolt action enough to justify it.

Its half MOA now, so its hard spend the $$

I would simply shoot out the current tube, then send it to GAP for a rebarrell, etc.

A lot of this can be done very well as piecework with smaller chunks of $$.

I didn't see it on their site, but do they offer the Palma sites with it?

What rings are those? Look like Mark 4 Meds?

dont think George has any palma rears or the globe front, got mine from CMP few years ago.

Which rings you askin about? the M24 has Badger mediums, and the SPR has Badgers as well

I bought a 5r last year as i knew sending my gun off to GAP for an upgrade was going take longer than i wanted to be without.

Well I ended up dressing up the 5r a little and it shoots so much better than i could have ever hoped for. I still haven't got my gun back from GAP so I can't give you a comparision, but one thing to consider is the time its going to take to get one made.

What's the average turn around time? I'm sure it varies, but how long did some of you wait?

I can wait, not a big problem. I have other rifles to shoot. I'm actually crazy enough to getting to the point of using my original BCD4 K98 with Zeiss Zielsechs on a long side rail in a 600 yard competition at the club/range I go to.

Do you really need justification to spend more on another rifle? Come on, if you ask you KNOW what the answer is....BUY! Yes, you sit around staring at pictures, looking at your guns, dreaming about perfect days at the range shooting and breaking in a new rifle,thinking about how "this one" will make you complete, and that you promise it's the last one you'll buy for a while.FUK THAT and stop BS'ing yourself ! We all understand and go thru the same shit.....get it, shoot it, and don't make excuses.Just make sure we see pictures....

I was on R&R in early 2005 when I stopped by and visited with George and put my order in(back when they were in the old shop) and it was waiting on me when I re-deployed 4 months later, dont know how long it was waitin on me though.

I love the M24, and a GAP M24 would be a sweet rifle to own, but I can't justify it in the standard configuration for a couple of reasons. I also have a 5R, and it shoots better than I do, so I wouldn't really get any more out of the rifle. Plus, the M24 is heavier and a long action, which isn't really necessary for a .308, IMO. What I decided to do was keep my 5R, and use that for my primary .308, and build an M24 replica in .300 Win Mag. I should have the Rock barrel on Tuesday! In my mind this suits the platform better. It takes advantage of the long action, and justifies a 14 pound rifle, while still appearing the same as an M24. And since I'm keeping my 5R, I can shoot that while I wait for the M24 to be built.

I went through a similar situation. I had a rifle that I pieced together. It did shoot well and would shoot 1/2 moa on occassion. I finally talked myself into a GAP. I sold the other rifle added some cash to it and took the plunge. End result, first time at the range I shot a .111 three shot group. Best I have ever shot. Go gap and don't look back.

Or you can call remington military and order a m24 rifle only for approx 2900 dollars. I know this becuase i was in teh process of ordering one. wait time lst time i checked....6 months ago was 1 year or less wait.
