Should I mod M14 I have for service rifle competition?

Hello,
I have an M14 with SEI cast receiver of about mid 80’s vintage. Rifle appears to be complete original GI build from 1962 with just the substitution of SEI semi-auto receiver. I’d like this to be as accurate and competitive as the NM AR15 I now shoot in service rifle. Opinions on modding this rifle to NM specs, or buy an already completed NM rifle? Thanks.

Well,
I decided to keep M14 as is. From all I’ve read I don’t think I’ll be as competitive with that rifle as I can be with the ‘16. Best.

Not sure where you are from, but lots of ranges hold wood rifle matches, or vintage rifle matches, and the 14 may qualify for those. I think you're right about the AR being a better rifle from a competitive standpoint, including being more forgiving for the shooter. I know that is the case for me. Keeping your M14 in its current configuration is a good call IMHO.
