I have a 700 Rem in 300 win mag. Mcmillan A-5 stock. I bedded it with Devcon Titanium putty. I have noticed that the reciever, (according to the oil printing from the reciever) is only touching about the width of the pillar and the length of the front ring on the front end and is fully contacting on the rear pillar and the entire rear tang from the rear of the safey lever inlet to the rear of the reciever. It does not appear to be touching anywhere else. Is this a BAD thing? Should I re bed it? Will this mess with accuracy??
Thanks for the help.

This will probably continue bugging you until you redo the bedding. If thats the case, just do it.

If the rifle shoots well as-is, you'll likely gain no accuracy by redoing the bedding.

Well, It shoots pretty damn good. Im still in the process of building a load but right now my best group is 3 shots at 100yds. at 0.293" CTC. Thing is, on that group, I had the other 2 shots blow the group to .961 CTC.

Now one thing is, I think the bbl. was actually touching the barrel channel a bit. So I am opening the free float from .075" to .175". That should fix that problem. Also, I havent shot this rifle enough yet (only about 125 rds) to be able to say for sure that the 2 flyers werent me doing something stupid on my trigger pull. But then again this isnt the first big rifle I have shot.

But I was just wondering because the reciever not making full 100% contact with the stock. Of course Ive heard a floating action is a very good thing. Thats mainly why I was wonderin. Thanks again for the input.

Re: Should I RE Bed My Action???

IMHO, it probably won't improve a thing. Unless you are seeing something that you can't account for ie, double grouping, an uncalled flyer or something similar, there is probably nothing wrong with what you have.

However, if it bugs you to the point that you won't have confidence in the rifle and will always question if it is the bedding every time you blow a shot, then do the re-bed.

Double grouping?

HMMMMMMM! Well, now I realize this was during a load test session where I was shooting 5 shots each with different loads but, on 2 of my groups I did have 2 groups. On both, it was a group of 3 that were high left then 2 that were low right. Now there were alot of things to consider though. 1, I believe that the bbl was touching the stock in one spot sometimes but not all the time. 2, I was shooting different loads. All loads were touching lands but the charge weight was changing. And 3, I could have been pulling? I dont think I was but might have been.

Well, now I know there is no way the bbl can ever touch the forend. I will have to try the loads again and see what happens. Thanks again.
