So this maybe should be in the stupid marksman forum, but what is the difference between the 2. I had thought they were the same thing but different words but one place I was looking at (can’t remember where) said I had to pick one.

A shouldered barrel snugs up against the receiver face, Rem700 being an example of that. A pre-fit is typically a Savage type arrangement with a barrel nut.

It is popular with some these days to convert a traditionally shouldered action system to a Savage barrel nut type. Hence terms like "Remage" or "Howage".

A shouldered barrel can be a prefit as well as a barrel nut setup can be a pre fit.

If the receiver is consistent a shouldered barrel can be cut using a print instead of measuring the actual action.

It looks like most places say prefit or barrel nut. If I am looking to just to screw it to the face of the origin without a barrel but, what exactly should I look for. I was thinking prefit but maybe that’s not correct. Thanks for the help so far

Lol
It’s not that difficult.
Find a smith to do a shouldered prefit for your origin.
Keystone accuracy is a great source but there’s lots of other great smiths doing bighorn pre fits as well.

pre fit= a barrel cut without action in hand.
Can be a barrel nut or shouldered.

that makes sense there! Thanks and sorry!

no one has discussed headspace. If you are going to install your own barrel you are going to need to know how to head space it correctly... even a shoulder barrel needs to be checked for correct headspace.

I have not done that yet but I do know that it needs to be done and I have done some research on it. Thanks for mentioning it though. This is all new to me so I am learning while I go.

Shouldered Pre-Fit doesn't necessarily need to HS check, you should for safety. I usually don't.
For barrel nut pre-fit, you HAVE to check HS. Because the HS is on the bbl nut (which has variable positions on the breech end theads)...which acts as a "shoulder".

If the headspace on shouldered barrel was not to your satisfaction, what could you do? Would it not require it to be turn on a lathe?
Yes but the actions you’ll normally get barrels like that for are very consistent and problems are very rare and If you buy from a good source they’ll certainly take care of you.

PROOF Research Prefits for the Bighorn Arms actions do not require the barrel nut, although the barrel nut can make the exchange easier; they also don't require headspacing because PROOF Research manufactures them to Bighorn Arms tolerances, however double checking never hurt anyone and I for one always go by what I heard from Ronald Reagan "trust but verify." With the PROOF Bighorn prefits all you need is their action wrench, a torque wrench, some anti-seize (I use Nickel based Permatex), and a barrel vise and your gtg.
