I have several high end scopes in my posesion/on the way and i was wanting to do a SXS comparison of them, and i was thinking that switching from one rifle to another is impractical. I was thinking of building a mount to go on top of my spotting scope tripod that would have 2-3 picatinny rails mounted on it, so i could remove each scope and place them SxS on the mount, allowing EASY movement from one to the other, and giving that "instant" change to allow more detailed comparison. Has anyone else thought of building something like this or any other ideas? Scopes i have and will be comparing are

Zeiss Hensoldt 4-16x56
S&B PMII 3-12x50
Zeiss Diavari 6-24x56
Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50
Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56
Nightforce Benchrest 8-32x56
Horus Vision Predator 8-32x50

Re: Side By Side Comparison Mount??

I have seen stuff like this at SHOT. I am guessing some companies make such fixtures themselves.

very nice, i would like to make mine out of picatinny rails though, as i dont want to have set 30mm, 34mm and 35mm mounts on it because its a "fixed" order, and who knows what tubes they will have?? neat idea though, for a static mount that you know what you are going to be displaying.

maybe buying a few 20moa rails and drilling them to a board? </div></div>

No point buying 20moa rails, i am not trying to get any change in elevation. Just flat rails, that are spaced so a sa/la spaced ring setup will bolt on, and you can place 2-4 scopes on at once for easy movement from one to the other

Thinking 1/3" aluminum plate about 5"x11" and mount 4 rails, then drill and tap the plate to accept the screw from my tripod. I think it would be decent....

Re: Side By Side Comparison Mount??

Ummm, wouldn't it be cheaper and more efficient to just buy rings and mount/glue them in a line? What's the point of having a rail there if you only need 1 ring to hold the scope in place.

because of the huge variance in tube size. how do i know if im going to be checking 4 30mm scopes? or 1 30mm and 3 34mm scopes? if i mount a rail, all of my scopes are already in rings and will bolt right on.

I see now, that makes sense if you want to keep the scopes in the rings.

Re: Side By Side Comparison Mount??

ya, i can get a 12" piece of rail on ebay for about $20 shipped. Should be able to make the entire mount for around $50. I think it will be pretty cool...

Re: Side By Side Comparison Mount??

Samson makes a short Picatinny rail that is tapped for bipod plates. I use one when I want to do the optics evaluation on riflescopes in a place where I can't drag a rifle out. What I typically do is use only the bottom half of the rings, so I can quickly swap scopes and have them pointed to the same spot.

However, this arrangement does not allow me to look at scopes side-by-side unless I want to set-up two tripods.

I just use the largest diameter rings (bottom halves) for the scopes I'll be looking at that day. If the scope is smaller diameter than the rings, it will still self-center just fine for my purposes.
