My entire life I have shot with open sights (M16 and M14). The first time I mounted and shot through a scope was two weeks ago on a Weatherby Vanguard I bought to take my son deer hunting. Total noobie here in regards to scopes and bolt guns. Last night I ordered a Savage 10FCP-K and I have been looking at getting the SWFA SS 10x42 to mount on it.

Is the side focus worth an extra $100?

NO, go with rear focus.

Side focus is a nice convenience, but in this case, not worth it. I have owned several rear focus scopes from the SS line, and they all work just fine for what they are.

As stated above, go with the rear focus with this one.
