I have heard guys suggesting using silly putty to seal off the open areas in the action and the mag well when bedding a rifle. I hesitantly gave the silly putty a try, but I had suspicions of what may happen due to my previous encounters with that junk. When left sitting over a small amount of time, silly putty acts like a liquid. It will "melt" and spread out, almost like you would expect honey to do. So after I filled all of the voids in the action and poured my devcon, in no time the silly putty was leaking downward with gravity and falling all over the place making a mess. Luckily it did not screw the bedding job to hell, so I dodged a bullet this time. However, it is a poor choice, and I would highly recommend something that maintains its shape like clay.

What temp was it where you were working?

I have used it several times without issue, but my shop is air conditioned, so I was wondering if that may have something to do with the different results.

I use it but only to plug pin holes and such. Magazine wells really dont need to be sealed off during the process. I even used it on your rifle

Maybe that's it. I don't fill the mag well either, only the smaller holes.

It has absolutely nothing to do with temperature, up to a point, but I doubt anyone here is gonna bed a rifle at freezing temps. Go ahead, open an egg of silly putty, then put the wad back in the egg. Open it an hour later and the putty will have formed a flat surface in the egg. Go ahead and try it in the refrigerator, it doesn't matter.

For small screw holes and such, yes, it is fine. But anywhere that has an exit in line with gravity will leak it out.

Not noticeably, but it is magnetic (on another topic).

the dollar stores in my area carry single small containers of clay, fake play-do(doh?) for a buck. cheaper than hobby lobby or craft and art supply stores

AXEMAN is right...Play-Doh instead of silly putty. Or go to a craft shop and get real non hardening modeling clay. It is a oil based concoction that won't rust your gun and can be removed with any solvent.
