Guys forgive me as I am a novice when it comes to AR-15’s.

    Three part question.

I have been looking at getting a different upper for my AR. Right now I have an all stock 16” bushmaster A2 purchased back in 96 (post ban model) and it shoots great but I like the more balanced look of the mid-length 16” uppers. To make the switch is there anything else I will have to add/do to get the new upper to shoot and function properly. Or is it a straight forward switch. I think it came with a rifle length buffer tube as it has the rifle stock on it.

2: I want to run a scope most of the time. If the new upper has the fixed front sight on the barrel/gas block will it block my view once the scope is attached (using a flat top receiver), or will I be able to see over it since it sits so high anyway. I know I could just go with a straight flat top w/o iron sights but those generally are a little more than I wish to spend unless I absolutely have too. I am not shooting comps with this; it’s just a fun gun. I do plan on shooting out to 600 on the range and at an occasional passing coyote.

3: I am looking at the CMMG line, will those hold better than MOA using tailored reloads most of the time or are they more of a battle accuracy upper as they seem to cater more to the MIL-SPEC crowd. My bushmaster has me spoiled with .25-.5 moa groups, even with the scope mounted high on top of the carry handle.

Ive had two CMMG 16" barrels. One was a middy and the other was a carbine length system. They both shot ok, moa-ish. The only problem I had was with the middy and the grooves for the FSB pins were cut wrong and the sight didnt line up.

Just attach your new upper and start shooting. There shouldn't be any modification necessary.

I have a full front sight post on my LT DMR. It has a 16" bbl and free floated gas tube. I am currently running a Horus black bird 1.5 to 8 power scope on it with no issues involving the front sight post. It has a T1 microdot top mounted on the scope. I thoroughly enjoy this setup. And it also allows for a low profile back up site to be installed.

The fixed front sight doesn't cause any problems with the scope, but it can hinder longer top-rail mounted accessories. I can run a Pvs22 or small thermal like insights su232, but longer things like a pvs 26/27 and longer thermals won't fit between the scope and fixed front sight.

You can just find the upper you want and put it on. I might make the recomendation to go with a upper without the FSB and run flip sights. Both Bushmaster / DPMS (now owned by the same company) for example offer a " optics ready " upper that has the railed gas block instead of the FSB. There are also quite a few companies that make good flip sights that wont break the bank, EMA tactical, Mid West Industries,ARMS, YHM ect.

I am just waiting on a better trigger so I can unlock its true potential. I got a decent blasting load with 55 FMJ and a target/coyote load with the Hornady 75 BTHP sorted out. That is if I exclude my fliers presumably from the gritty 8 pound stock trigger, both of those look to be 1 moa or a little tighter. I will put a more appropriate scope on it after I confirm my loads with the new trigger.
