So I've recently picked up a couple of new toys, among them a remmy 870. I like it, but the action is gritty. What can I do to smooth it out a bit besides just shooting the hell out of it? Are there certain areas that can be lapped or something? I'm not a shotgun guru but I understand enough about it to take it apart so please throw me some suggestions.

Re: smoothing out an 870 shotgun

A true armorer will hopefully chime in for ya'. I've done the Remmy 870 armorers course and maintain our dept 870's. In my experience...shooting it more MIGHT help smooth it out. I have found that often there is a lot of binding in the slide rails going into the action. Sometimes these have to be tweeked a bit here and there to make the action smooth. YMMV. Jeff

Re: smoothing out an 870 shotgun

Think about this for a second it may help you find the bending area. Take the shotgun and clean all the working parts. Now take the time to look at them good and right down any scrub marks you see on the working parts. May even take a sharpie and draw a line thru them. Put everything back together easily not to make any new scrub marks on the parts. Now dry fire the shit out of it for a few minutes letting all the parts work as should within the gun. Now that it back apart and look for new scrub marks (many not be any new ones) and look at all of the old scrub marks. If the sharpie lines are still there don't worry with these spots to much. Now the scrub spots that got the sharpie scrubed off of them is rubbing somewhere in the action. You can try to smooth out this area with a polish stone or twick them as needed. Do it slowly and only try to remove what is needed. I would try working the parts that come out of the receivre the most, but do look inside the receiver good for burrs in the tracks the action runs in.

You could also us a little lapping compound at the scrub marks and work the action some and see if it startes to smooth out. Just remember to clean all the lapping compound out as soon as it smoothes out. All this may take multiple tries to get where you want it.

Hope this helps.

Re: smoothing out an 870 shotgun

I do a lot of shotguns and there are a number of key areas to stone. When doing so, you have to use a specific type of ceramic stone, as you shouldn't remove a lot of material because the goal is to put a nice polish on these areas. It's possible to make the 870 function as smooth as glass.

The rear sight is a "Skunkworked" LPA and the front is handmade and is available with Tritium or Fiber Optic insert.
