So I'm watching the intro to Bones tonight and the despicable woman lawyer serial killer is being moved into the Courthouse and - SPLAT - it looks like somebody tossed a watermellon in the middle of the set - but it's her head exploding and throwing bits of bloody tissue and blood splatter all over the place. It has to be the most graphic movie headshot I've seen, and on prime time TV. According to the story it was done with a solid copper bullet (Barnes X) from .338 Lapua Magnum except the deformed slug clearly showed a grooved canelure, while the computer reconstructed bullet had multiple smooth canelures.

Off to a good start but the story soon gets more details all fouled up. Trajectories at impact and from the hide are all wrong - too flat and from the wrong angle. Shot is supposedly taken from 1,489 yards - no way for a head shot. Then we see the weapon - it looks like a Remmy 700 LTR in .308 with its short action and 20" barrel.

Anyway I'll watch it out to see how they paint the suspects. Curious to see if anyone else watched this one.

If your talking about the .308 that booth uses to look at the shot then yes but I don't think that was the gun used. And yes the trajectory was all messed up.

Just watched this episode on hulu and gotta say damn. That was a bad ass scene. The rifle that you see Booth using does look like a LTR. Although I dont recall them saying that was the rifle used, just one Booth brought along to simulate the scenario. I do agree with the ballistics part. It was completely lacking in the reality factor and made some crazy assumptions. One example is when they handed a .338 bullet to Booth in a bag and he imediately declared it was a .338 Lapua. I guess there arent any other rounds that fire a .338 bullet now

I think the media needs to get over the .338 Lapua... hell, beaurocrats in this country are scared of it, just because of stories they hear. Bunch o'noobs if you ask me.

Yeah, that was one heck of a graphic scene. Especially for television.

The rifle Booth brought to the apartment was just to verify the shot (looking through the scope), it never said it was the same rifle or caliber.

Also, how did Booth automatically know that no one heard the shot because of the long distance, and not because of the use of a suppressor? Knowing minor detail quirks like that have really ruined the thought-free enjoyment of movies and TV shows for me. Damn ye, knowledge!

I completely agree. A lot of movies I used to think were cool are now ruined because of what I have learned not only through the military, but through sites like this.

Television shows and movies are not training films. Insisting on technical accuracy will ruin many otherwise good stories.

I used to point out a lot of those kind of flaws, until I realized that I was only doing so to show off to others how much I knew, and in doing so, I was ruining the show not only for others, but for myself.

I decided to just sit back and enjoy the show. When I notice a technical flaw, I just smile.

Your mileage may vary.

My wife loves that show and I saw the head shot. It was very graphic for TV...I guess I have not learned what you have Lindy I still find myself pointing out the technical flaws of something. I have gotten better but she can still tell when I see something that isnt quite right.

I love the sound of a hammer being cocked when the guy pulls his glock, happens all the time in cop shows. the wife even catches that one as well as the never ending mag in most 1911s.

Good observation. Ill have to remember that and just roll with it. I could understand how that would be annoying to other folks.

Good point Lindy. Better to just enjoy the movie and pass on the details - but sometimes that's easier said than done.

What grabbed my attention on this one though was how graphic the head shot portrayal was on prime time TV. That really shocked me and IMHO it was much more graphic than the one in Shooter.

Gruesome scene. But really, I can't think of any very accurate sniper based stories on TV. And that's fine, but it makes everyone who doesn't know anything think some guys are miracle workers.

I mean, no way that's a head shot from 1400+ yards. Hell, for how many guys is it a one shot hit?

The problem I saw was that even if the sniper used a supressor the projectile would still be supersonic at 1,400 yds. and you would still hear the crack of it breaking the sound barrier. Plus the trajectory was nearly head level when the firing position was at least 5-6 stories up. Even if the angle shot made it level relative to the plane of the line of sight it would still have impacted in the sidewalk, not 5' up on the marble stair wall. Very graphic for TV, indeed.

Wasn't it made from a car oil filter? That will actually work on a .22 or a pistol for a few shots.
Or did he make it from a empty plastic water bottle. I forget.

even on a target at the same level the bullet would be plunging at that range. You are right. it might turn and yaw some when going through the target, but not that much.
To civilians Snipers are mystical and evil. TV continues to portray them that way.
I most ways the shot itself is very technical and boring, at least on the sending end.the receiving end is a different story,of course.
A unexpected head shot does make a impression on those who see the result and get splattered with grey matter. They get pretty skittish after that, for some reason. Quite a effective psychological tool when the opportunity presents itself.
But think of the scene this way. The shooter may have been trying for a center mass hit, and got lucky. That's more realistic. it could have just as easily hit her in the pelvis. Then she would be rolling around screaming with her shattered uterus on the curb.
If she was wearing Kevlar the bullet would go right through. it doesn't work on spitzer type pointed FMJ's or solid copper alloy,so a center mass hold would have been appropriate.
