Makes you wonder where peoples common sense is. This is a loose loose situation for the British army. I'm sure the British journalists are probably much the same as over here. They probably would have sued the army for the right to print the soldiers name, his and his families safety be damned.

Re: Sniper sues Army over error which put him in dange

When that article came out, I was very suprised that they not only named him, but showed a picture of him as well. Not that I agree with the suing part, but they should have kept his identity secret. Epic fail on whomever let that info slide.

They have some crazies over in England that would have no problem doing harm to that family. The weird part is that they are openly against non Muslim people

Re: Sniper sues Army over error which put him in dange

I think that is really sad that this happened to him. This soldier served his country, is obviously very good at his job, and has probably saved many lives in doing what he does.
He deserves far better than he got. He and his family.
Reguardless of the outcome, he and his family can never go back to the way things were. Their carreers are over and they are now targets. How can you fix that? Obviously, his job has inherent risks, but indiscretion on the part of the MoD and the press shouldn't be one of them. I think someone needs to be held accountable, and I would even say that the press should also be named in the suit. After all, I believe that a "reasonable and prudent" person could clearly see how making the sniper's identity public would most likely jeopardize his and his family's safety. That being said, I realize that the press has it's own agenda and can't be expected to give 2 sh*ts about the conciquences of their actions. The real responsibility was on the part of the MoD and they failed the soldier miserably.

I’ve worked with the Brits. Many good guys. But remember their subjects not citizens! Hell, they just about banned guns and knifes. Next: Operators! Getting this way in the USA if we aren’t careful.

Common sense for a common man. +1.

From what I understand, he was interviewed and he was the one who told the interviewer about his 1.5 mile kills. I dont think he should have been talking about it. Its his fault for releasing the info.

"The soldier was interviewed during a medals parade at his regiment's barracks.

He revealed how he had shot dead two Taleban fighters manning a machine gun. Although the sniper's rifle was only designed to be effective over a range of just under a mile, he was able to kill the insurgents at a range of 1.5 miles."

Some things are better left unknown

He deserves far better than he got.

that statement goes for every British serviceman or woman past and present and more than likely future too.

its usual to get told what to say to the press and what not and for some reason the MOD seem to be looking for long range hero's at the moment, it gives the general public the impression that the bad guys are bieng taken out 1 by 1 from far away with no collateral damage and absolute certainty of target in a very clean type of warfare and no messy awkward problems to explain in the way. "Its a tough job, but our super trained snipers are up to it".
I don't think a soldier telling the press, " I speared him through the groin with my bayonet, and smashed his mates skull with my rifle butt" would be quite as welcome news or half as popular, even if its questionably just as common as a 1500m shot.

As far as I'm concerned the guys and gals over there deserve every scrap of recognition they get. They sure as hell don't get paid enough. It is however very unfortunate that it is a very real possibility that revenge could be taken by certain elements of the UK society.
I think the only reason we haven't seen car bomb attacks on UK mainland / EU based British Forces is because the head shed of the enemy know damn well that is the fastest way to cement the nation together against the terrorist enemy, whilst at the moment they portray a cuddly taliban freedom fighter akin to William Wallace but with a turban defending hut and compound from imperialistic US puppet attack.
I hope to heck they don't change tactics and start targeting of duty servicemen and women, we had enough of that shit with the IRA. I still feel uncomfortable getting into a vehicle that I haven't personaly checked underneath, and thats 14 years after handing my green kit in.
Lets hope there is a satisfactory outcome for the young man.

You think the Brits have Islamic issues? We aren't even close to the population they have. Mark my words, these non integrating, non appreciative asshole rag heads will never assimulate into our sociaty but continue to stay in their enclave's as a seperate but equal microcosm. Want to solve this before it happens? Send them all back.
You think 'joe' is at risk from his deployment? You bet your ass. All it takes is one Muslim to be questioned after leaving a base by a Taliban or Insurgent and the risk is real here too. BS you say? Fact. It's already happened

Re: Sniper sues Army over error which put him in dange

yeah i'd say their army f'ed up a bit. if they weren't worried about "one man's life" or his family, they at least should have been worried about the mission sensitive information this guy could provide to the other side.

that' why, even on this site, how so many that suppossed to have walked the walk are so eager to post up un altered pictures their faces, vehicles (with identifying numbers visible), etc.

perhaps the brits got tied up in this whole "who's got the best sniper" competition that the iraq / afghanistan wars seemed to have breeded, and hurried to confirm and exploit what their man did so they can in turn beat their chests.
