Well dems in congress pushing gun control have cited MotherJones as a reputable expert source. It also comes up a lot if you do a google search for gun control. Kind of fun to read if your feeling in the mood to be angry kind of like the pit at times.

The appearance of plate carriers and AR's at rallies, IMHO, is not some recent development. People have had that stuff for years, just left at home or in their vehicles.
The difference is that many have peacefully protested in the past (TeaParty for example), often times leaving the areas cleaner than when they arrived to protest, only to see themselves silenced by the media. Or worse ridiculed, demonized and physically attacked (KR for example).
People are done. They're tired of it, and the rich, urban elites who bankroll it, and shove their view down everyone's throat.
And so, they come more openly prepared to defend themselves.
If you want to blame someone for the militarization of some of the protestors on the right, I'd suggest you look to the Mayors and Police Chiefs that looked the other way when peaceful protestors were attacked, or riots by left wing groups were ignored and allowed to ensue at will.
When people have no faith in equal protection by law enforcement (whether it be true or not), people will show up armed and armored.
IMO, the faith in equal justice under the law, or the lack of faith to be more specific, has been the greatest threat to civilized society and a functioning government. Without that social contract in place, applied equally, we are (sadly) doomed to an ever escalating conflict.

Furthering this narrative is why we will continue to see the barriers, razor wire and NG deployed in Washington DC. It is a visual reminder that the capital must be protected at all costs from the continued threats of violence from insurrectionists / domestic terrorists.

Last time I ate in an Army Dining Hall was interesting to say the least,
Jacob and I went to Irwin with 3rd Ranger Bat, and with all the grooving standards relaxed, Recce guys, Snipers, etc, they actually had to get out of uniform to eat. Their hair was too long and some had beards so they had to wear civilian clothes, in order to dine.
Then you add in me and Jacob to the mix, he had his Surfer Hair at the time, sorta 1/2 in uniform and 1/2 out, the Patch Brigades were on fire, especially the Tankers trying to figure out who was what because the Rangers don't wear patches either
Dining in the Army is interesting nowhere as kool as in the Marines
