Snowpocalypse Now

Re: Snowpocalypse Now

Holy crap!!!

As the warmer temps should return in a few days, and snow doesn't usually sit long in that latitude anyway, you'll probably start to see a melt happen pretty soon. The wet snow is way heavier than the equivalent depth of the "dryer snow seen in the frosty north, at high altitude and away from the moderating influences of the ocean.

You have a lot on your plate but 3/8" ply was never spec as roof sheathing. 16" for rafters and 24" for trusses is also a long standing convention as well. But you know your own house.

At 3/8" ply, a person's weight in addition to the snow load, may be asking for trouble.

Another trick is to lash a rope on each end of a 10' to 12' 2X6 and toss it up onto the roof and drag plow the snow off as much as you can. This is trickier than it sounds, (and not without Three Stooges quality consequences) even with 1 story, shallow pitched roofs with no vents, chimney's or other stacks impeding the drag board.

Hopefully it'll get good and warm over the next few days so you all can enjoy the thrill of slush...

Is that snow wet and heavy? I wonder about the relatively shallow pitched roofs in those parts being able to carry such a deep and heavy load.

And trailers, oh dear...</div></div>
Yes. "Q" it can be very heavy. Roofs caving in is a serious threat. I remember chopping snowfall/ sierra cement off of my father-in laws house (with axe)in Tahoe CA.to keep it from crashing through his house and their houses were designed to handle that kind of snowfall....The building codes in other areas are not always required for that kind of snowfall. The weight is tremendous....And weak roofs make the threat even worse

Re: Snowpocalypse Now

The problem here in Northern Virginia is that the gov't only has like 5 trucks. Plus the trucks seem to be small than what I remember as a kid in CT. Also, all the cars parked on streets causes massive problems.

We get two feet of snow up here and no one cares. I'm just kidding, I love seeing all this mess, kinda makes me happy to see Al Gore look stupid.

Can anyone local to the DC area comment on the number/percentage of private sector enterprises that have been closed the same amount of time?

Most the private sevtor here is still related to gov't and follows their schedule (meaning paid for by taxes). In general right now, white collar means you're at home all week. Places to shop and eat are mostly open.

Much of the public residential roads are still literally buried and untouched after almost 40 inches, so some people have no choice but to sit put. We also had a large number of people w/o power. The high school by me was not touched at all until late last night since the initial snowfall 4 days earlier. Today we had wind up to 60mph so even the plows had to give up. On the news now they are saying it will still be another 3 days until everyone has seen their neighborhood pavement.

Re: Snowpocalypse Now

Please quit PM-ing me and asking me if I am crazy. I have been cooped up in the trailer for over a week with my bride, Aunt Gert, and 9 kids. On Tuesday, we played UNO for 14 straight hours and I lost every game before I realized that Aunt Gert was sitting on a bunch of Wild Draw Four Cards. I lost over 5 dollars.

Today, the sun came out and I am finally able to get out and shovel some snow.

Re: Snowpocalypse Now

The current southern storm seems to be gaining more strength than it was forecast to do.
It is also making its way further north than anticipated.
New watches are warnings are going up for NC and Southern VA.
Fayetville, Charlotte, etc. 2-5 inches.
Raleigh and North, 1-4 inches.

On noon news, they seemed genuinely surprised by the changes and they cautioned that it may not be done drifting more Northward yet.
