My question is, is there any practical reason to go for a 7.62 rated can?

Why not just use a .30 cal can rated for big bores?

This way I'd have a can that can do double duty on my REPR and something like a .338 Lapua later on as well.

Is it just cost, size and weight a factor?

Only problem I see is you add another 2-2.5" to a 7.62 can. Weight will be negligible if you go Ti and lighter than a steel 7.62 can. If the length is no issue to you itmwould be viable.
