Soft case for Windrunner M96

Re: Soft case for Windrunner M96

look in the equipment section and get a case from grt gear, he is on this site and will make you the bag of your dreams custom tailored to your rifle. or if it fits, a Tac Ops bag is one of the finest if not the finest on the planet.
Grt gear's screen name is HASGUNWILLTRAVEL.

Re: Soft case for Windrunner M96

I have the Tac Force bag. So far it's holding up to the 338 LM and the Barrett M99. Been very happy with it for the money. The Windrunner is a bit bulky and just barely fit it. Would love to have the Extralong HSRC bag, but just could justify the price.

Re: Soft case for Windrunner M96

I also have the Triad/Eagle Extra long drag bag that I use for the Windrunner- I found that once I mounted my USO, the EDM bag was too small.

What I usually do is remove the bipod and bolt when I bag it to make the package flatter and easier to zip. The bolt I store in an eagle scope cover along the barrel, the bipod just above the muzzle pocket in the drag bag.

I ordered the EDM hard case when I bought my Windrunner in January '09. The case didn't show up until August or September and when it finally arrived it had no foam, seals, gaskets, or straps. EDM sent a UPS tag to have it picked up, but I haven't heard anything from them since. Coming up on a year now.. Might be time for me to give them another call.

You can use carbine Assault Systems case like the one behind this 300 WM.

It had a Velcro fastener inside on each end which held the barrel in place, the rifle in collapsed position fit in the the case.

Sewed a shoulder harness to it, it worked great.

Total cost was less then $180.

I can only imagine that the Great American Firearms Craze of '09 made the cases hard for them to come by.

I also think that the move to Utah may have been more disruptive to EDM than anticipated. The build quality of my Windrunner is not quite the example of perfection that I had expected, given EDM's great reputation. And while it's often said that EDM is a company where you can always call and someone will answer the phone, well, sometimes you just want things to happen as they are supposed to- without needing a phone call.

But my experience may be anomalous.

Re: Soft case for Windrunner M96

I love my Windrunner, but I do have some minor glitches that I thought shouldn't happen with such a fine built rifle. Now, I am not bashing anyone. Would I get a Windrunner again knowing what I know now? Answer is still Yes. Like Rev Rocco said, "somtimes you just want things to happen as they are supposed to-without needing a phone call".

Re: Soft case for Windrunner M96

What have you guys noticed with your Windrunners that is less than what you expected? I just picked up my M96 in .408 last night - a quick overview and it looked fine, but I did notice inside the receiver some very small voids, pin head sized, in the mag well area. Not something I expected to see on a precision, EDM rifle. If I find anything else I'll post up - and I'll try to get some pics of those voids.

1. The first thing I noticed was, when changing the scope base, most of the bolts had bottomed out in the threaded holes on the top of the receiver. While hard on the threads, this actually worked as an advantage because I didn't need loctite.

2. However, the bolt at the front of the trigger guard was bottomed out completely and wasn't even holding the guard firm to the receiver- all the holding was being done by the rear bolt

3. The bolt release has a habit of letting the bolt come right out the back of the rifle if I'm not real gentle with it. It seems to get bound up on it's pivot and not reposition itself after a couple of cyclings.

4. When I went to turn down my barrel nut to fashion a forend tube I found that almost nothing was concentric.. The flange was not concentric to the knurled outside, and the center hole was not concentric to that. Seems like it would be harder to make NOT be concentric than it would be to make it concentric, by my estimations- though I am only an amateur machinist.

5. The plastic flange that fits inside the barrel nut (presumably to protect the barrel) was poorly manufactured, also not concentric, and didn't really fit the nut very well. In the end I had to shave it a bit and glue it in place.

6. I got a badly xeroxed .408 manual with my .50DTC. Sure, it's pretty much the same gun. But still. It also mentioned some included items that aren't included.

7. I've already told you about the hard case. The soft case I received is barely big enough, lengthwise, for the barrel to fit in. I would have liked just a half inch more.

8. The magazine rarely feeds without a double-cycle or manual assistance.

Like DesertHK I love my Windrunner. For the price, though, I would hope for perfection. Or I would be willing to pay a bit more if they offered "attention paid to detail" as an accessory.

I think you might find that eagle/Storm combo a little less than satisfying. First off, I'm not sure if the bipod will fit in the storm case when mounted- I would double check the measurements. Secondly, the Windrunner components are so heavy, I don't think the eagle case could hold them in place well enough. I have the case combo, and it's great for a couple ARs- not so sure for a windrunner.
The reason I paid for the EDM hard case is that it appears to have straps to hold the components in place in the foam. Perhaps someone can verify that for me..

Re: Soft case for Windrunner M96

There's two velcro straps that hold the barrel into the foam, that's it. Mine were broken when I picked up the rifle, but that was an easy fix with some crazy glue.

Well, I'm still very happy with mine- and it still shoots fine. As you can see, none of my issues are show-stoppers. In fact, if I could bear to part with it, I'm sure EDM would happily resolve any of my issues.

Now you have an idea of some things to look for if they concern you. I'm sure if these were common problems with Windrunners that EDM wouldn't have the terrific reputation that they do.

I didn't mean to start an EDM bash, and I don't want you to feel bad about your rifle before you even see it, because when it arrives, you're gonna love just sitting and staring at it.
