Hey guys,

I'm looking for a decent case for a rifle I have not yet measured OAl on. It's a SPS Varmint with 26"barrel, dropped in a Manners T2 with a Mk4 on top (to give you an idea on size). Loaded she weighs about 12.5lbs, and will always have a bipod attached.

I would prefer to not buy a $200+ tactical drag bag. I don't need a drag bag, don't plan on dragging my rifle from the backseat of my pickup to the range line very often. I have been looking online and searching here and have not come up with very many soft cases (that are not drag bags) that will hold a rifle that size. I guess if I have to buy a drag bag, so be it. But I would prefer just a nice case without all the bells and whistles.

Any recommendations???

This is about the only one I've found, but not sure if the rifle will fit in it with bipod attached and such. I have a couple other Boyt cases, and do like their quality and craftsmanship.

Or am I an idiot and not seeing the benefits to a fancy drag bag?

Thanks

The first thing you need to do is get an OAL measurement on your setup (I am betting you'll need a min of around 47" give or take).

If all you need is a basic case to go from your house, in the comfort of your car's backseat or trunk, to the range, and then home again, then you are right...no need whatsoever for a drag bag (unless you just want one).

That said, you can get a "drag-bag-like" case for 1/3 the price you are thinking. Right now, MidwayUSA has their black and OD drag bag cases on sale for $65 as seen here:

They are long, well-padded and offer plenty of room for your rifle, ammo, accessories and other gear you might want to carry. For the money, it is a decent case all around.

Aside from that, Midway also offers their "Pro Series" scoped rifle cases for around $35. I picked one up as a spare when they were on clearance a while back (I think I got it for $25) and it is thickly padded and offers a single exterior pocket big enough for a bipod, ammo, etc. See here:

Re: Soft Rifle Case, Non "drag bag" Style

That Midway case is actually one of my considerations at this point, because of it's price. I think it would fit the rifle better than the Boyt case.

I imagine quality is decent anyways, for what I intend to use it for?

Re: Soft Rifle Case, Non "drag bag" Style

I have the Boyt case you linked to in Green, and my TRG with bi-pod on it and scope (currently mounted way to high and still fits) fit without issue. I can keep some ammo in the pouch, and do keep my thread protector and a few odds and ins in there, but usually my ammo is in MTM handled boxes, and I just don't need it all in my rifle case. I like the Boyt a lot.

Re: Soft Rifle Case, Non "drag bag" Style

there's a bunch of stuff here economical drag bag / range bag perhaps similiar to what you need. scroll around and see.

if your not a "Gucci Guy" or need the highest quality stuff for operating, the Voodoo tactical stuff isn't to bad from the car to the bench, and very affordable. the other knockoff "tactical" softcases are ok for a similiar usage.

i like the softcase drag / range rifle case type bags for range use with enough pockets to fit all my range stuff. the "Real Deal" ones rarely have that many pockets and straps as they tend to get caught on stuff during "real" field use and could actually be more of an encumberance.

Re: Soft Rifle Case, Non "drag bag" Style

I had ordered a few Midway dragbags last week and they came in today. They look like a decent bag for $65. I think you could get a 26" barreled rifle in it. It has a feww good sized pockets for storage. a removable divider inside the main compartment along with storage pocket and shell loops.

I took some pictures of it to give folks a little btter look at one. I suppose you can remove all the straps and such to give it a cleaner look.

Re: Soft Rifle Case, Non "drag bag" Style

I orderd two of the midway bags as well. I'm going to see if I canget my Ar15 and bolt gun into one bag. I will snap a few pictures as well. I have no intention of draging it or playing sniper on the weekends. Looks like a nice bag to carry my guns in from the house to truck to range. I despise hard cases...

The only time I use a hard case any more is when I'm flying. Any other time I have my rifle in the soft cases. I even put them in the safe in the cases to keep from banging other rifles up. </div></div>

This rocks, custom made at a affordable price, I have one for each of my rifles, like all TAB Gear, its everything I NEED, and nothing I don't need.

Re: Soft Rifle Case, Non "drag bag" Style

Them Midway bags don't look too bad for the money I guess.

I am a fan of the Boyt cases I have, and like the clean non "tacticool" look of the case.

I measured my rifle at 46 3/4"....

Thanks for the info so far!!!!

Re: Soft Rifle Case, Non "drag bag" Style

I just got the Eagle Industries SR49BP and love it.
Got it from Wiskur Tactical (no affiliation...) http://www.wiskurtactical.com/home.php?cat=252
They were prompt in communicating and offered some suggestions.

My guess is you'll need at least a 44" or even a 46" case.
I went with the 49" and it fits my 44" cleaning rod as well.
Plenty of room for gear and not totally tacticooled out.

Midway's stuff is less expensive it seems, but I like Eagle's products.

Re: Soft Case, Non "drag bag" Midway USA bag.

Well I received my two Midway USA drag bags from UPS today. I have to admit that the material is nice and heavy duty. Everything seems to be double stitched with considerable padding inside. The strings on the zippers break off in your hand if you’re trying to squeeze a Ar15 and a bolt gun with scope covers in the bag. 550 cord to the rescue for that. I bought the drag bag as a way to carry my Ar15 and bolt gun to the range without having to use my hard cases that I despise. Nor can I see myself carrying this as a back pack. For those of you that are into all that I’ve been told the 5.11 double rifle case is the best thing going.

Here is the bag loaded with a scoped Ar15 and Bolt gun. Each gun is wearing a Eagle scope and muzzle protector.

Now I have to admit getting the guns and covers in this bag is tough.

However they do fit rather nice without the extra covers.

One of the internal pockets that I’ll use to place my bolt in. Or other goodies.

The backpack straps are pretty comfortable. Not that I’ve hiked around with this thing loaded for miles. More like in the living room with my son chasing me around wanting to wear it.

Now for those who don’t like the backpack straps here’s something you can do with them. This is a large pocket where you can release your QD buckles and store the straps in. If you’re so inclined you can also take the shoulder strap off. Every strap seems to be on some type of QD buckle.

All in all I think it’s going to be a nice soft gun case for my purposes.

I just ordered the same case from Wiskur.....You are correct, very prompt at communicating. Hell, Neil, the owner I believe, replies to emails sent to him at 9:30 at night pretty much immediately.
