I just got a set of rings in from a friend of mine. His name is Gary Costello and he won the World F-Class championship last year. He's having these built to his specs and I thought I'd post some information and pictures to see if there's any interest in them.

Here's Gary's website should anyone have any interest in contacting him.

http://www.marchscopes.co.uk/benchrest.php

They're made out of of 7075 milspec Aluminum alloy and were supposed to come out of the anodizer as a satin silver, but due to the copper content actually came out a kind of green color. I thought it was a pretty neat color and blends in very well with my rifle.

The screws are Allen head metric sized screws on these rings. I suggested that the Allen screws be changed out to Torx head screws since that is pretty universal everywhere. I had to go buy a 3mm and 5mm bits for my Borka Tool torque wrench before I could assemble everything.

The top has March Scopes engraved into them but will probably be left blank in the next run of rings. The set you see here are medium and he has them in 30mm and 34mm sizes.

As you can see in the pictures the inside edges of the rings are chamfered as are the seams where the two ring halves come together. this will eliminate any scope tube finish being scraped off when tightening the ring halves together.

There are two locator pins to keep the base clamp properly lined up while the rings are being tightened down. The inside edge of the clamping screw is also beveled to allow the clamp to center itself when tightening.

Each pair of rings has each half of each ring numbered with a 1 and a 2, so it's easy for the customer to be able to keep the rings indexed to each other when the rings are disassembled. I know there have been several times I've set a ring half down and either forgot to mark it, or didn't remember which way I had it facing when I put everything back together again.

Re: Some new scope rings

Those are definitely good looking rings. I don't see them on that sites price list. Any idea how much these are gonna cost?

Also, would they be shipped from the UK? Any idea if there are import charges or whatever?

Thanks,

Re: Some new scope rings

id really like to see a set of rings (i actually saw some somewhere) that were halved differently.

Currently almost all rings are cut in half horizontally across the scope tube hole. The lower and upper halves bolt together at the 9oclock and 3 oclock positions.. if this was rotated to the say 1030 and 530 positions, it would prevent part of the windage knob from being blocked. The area of the scope ring where the halves bolt together is the thickest and most obstructive to the windage knob view..

make it so when you bolt a scope in you drop it in at angle.. and the scope halves sit in the area between the parralax knob and elevation knob and the elevation knob and the windage knob..

would keep you from having to look hard to see where you are on the windage knob..

get it?

nice rings

Re: Some new scope rings

Gentlemen,

I got to check these rings out the other day on Tony's rifle and yes they are very nice. The attention to detail in ring pairs being stamped and the pinned base pieces keep them from twisting on the base when you do the tighten up. The smaller bolt heads keep from having more things to snag on gear and brush, unlike the 1/2" bolt heads on my Badger or MK4 rings that seem to always find somoething to grab onto. The inside beveled edges of the ring halves where they come togehter is a nice touch as well to keep from having that sharp line on your scope from the rings coming together. The finish is a little odd in color but looks really good on a rifle with green in the stock. Quality of the finish looked very nice. The only suggestion I had was maybe change the bolt heads for the ring halves and cross bolt to Torx to allow better bearing surface when tightening them up plus less chance of stripping it out. I too am intersted in what these will cost and what heights they will offer. Tony did they advise you what the suggested torque settings are for these rings? Thank you Tony for the review and we look forward to hearing how they hold up over time.

And here I thought I was about to see nylon woven rings...

I personally don't care for the windage adjustable rings, my one complaint with USO rings. It's not that I think they affect performance negatively in any way, I just dont see the point. Makes it that much more of a pain in the ass to re-zero if I happen to take the scope off and re-install it.

Re: Some new scope rings

The rings will cost $195.00

Currently they're only made in a 1" high version. I don't have my calipers this morning but on my 56mm objective there is approximately 3/16 gap between the barrel and objective. With the scope cover in place there's about 1/8 inch clearance.

I'll be recommending that he make a set that will get a 50mm objective down within this same area.

Superde, I'm not sure what you're referring to with the "prototype" comment?

dcskater602, there's a guy on here, he goes by the name Sphur and he makes either a set of rings, or a ring/base combo that is made in this manner.

Platypus, I've been told that the Torx screws are pretty expensive. I'm not sure why except maybe since they're beveled on the inside they may be hard to get ahold of. I'll get clarification on that. It's not that big a deal to buy two more bits to fit into my torque wrench bag if it comes down to that though.

I'm not quite sure what the recommended torque values are. I used 18 inch pounds on the caps and 50 inch pounds on the base screws. I'll get clarification on this.

Jason, I'm with you, but they're not windage adjustable. The clamp with the screws that are almost flush stay tight, the other side is the only side you loosen to install it onto your base.

Jackal1, I'm not quite sure what a Davidson base does, a quick search didn't help me much. These rings will fit a picatinny rail and if a Davidson base accepts rings that are compatible with this rail they should work on a Davidson base too I would think.

These will be available in black and the satin/green color that you see on my rifle. I know he has a few in stock at the moment with the March Scopes UK engraved on the top. I think He'll be making some in the future with no markings.

Also, he has some six screw rings being prototyped right now too if there's interest in those.

Re: Some new scope rings

I was just told that the rings can also be made for the Davidson rails with no problem. I'm not quite sure what the minimum order will be at this point on each different size and height but will find out.

Re: Some new scope rings

I'm working on getting an order put together for these rings.

They come in 30 and 34 mm at the 1" height, in the "greenis" and black colors.

A few people had expressed interest in them. If you'd like a set either let me know here or pm me and I'll begin a list to make sure you're taken care of on this shipment.

Re: Some new scope rings

I should have several sets of rings here either late next week or early the week after next.

I have:

five sets of the green 34 mm coming, three sets are already spoken for.
Three sets of the black 34 mm, one set is already spoken for.
Two sets of black 30 mm that are available.

If anyone is interested in any of these available ring sets just let me know.

Re: Some new scope rings

About how long would it take to have two sets made for a davidson base. One set with a 34mm bore and one set with a 30mm bore.Im not getting any response from SPUHR and might go with it.I would like them in the white since i will send them out for Anno..Also can they be lazered with Zeiss on top like the ones with March?

Re: Some new scope rings

I have some of these rings in hand and ready for shipment.

My current inventory is:
2 sets black 30 mm
2 sets black 34 mm
2 sets green 34mm

They all have "March Scope UK" engraved on the top ring half, just like in the picture.

Re: Some new scope rings

At this point there are not any plans to make the rings in that height. I'm sure he would listen if you want to get a group buy organized and have x number of confirmed orders that you would pay for at one time when the rings are delivered to me.

What the number would be to get him interested is I don't know. If you think it would be a big seller why don't you see what you can come up with and I'll be glad to ask him what his minimum order number would be. I would estimate that it would be around a minimum of ten sets though.
