Re: something new for my savage

chamber end. shilen select match. 24" 1/10 and S7 must be the maker? tried to see what made the select better than just the match, but didnt see the details on the site. got it for a good price though. havent a clue what to do next, lol. since i would have to buy everything i may just send it to get rebarreled. thinking about getting the action done also... just not sure. need a smith familiar with savage. barrel install, possible time & tune, maybe bed it.

Select Match Grade
These stainless steel masterpieces of machining and hand lapping are intended for the competition shooter-- or even the hunter-- who wants the ultimate in accuracy and quality. These are our highest grade barrel and, of course, the most costly. What makes them so good that benchrest shooters, such as Tony Boyer, crave them? Consider this: To meet Select Match Grade criteria, the groove diameter must air gauge within .0003" of our standard diameter. Moreover, the uniformity of the bore cannot vary more than .0001" for the entire length of the barrel. These barrels are also completely stress relieved, and the bore is polished to a gleaming surface finish by our most experienced lappers.

Match Grade
Our Match Grade barrels don't quite meet Select Match criteria-- but not by much! In these barrels, the bore must measure within .0005" of our standard diameter and cannot vary in diameter more than .0003" for the length of the barrel. So how much accuracy does a couple of "tenths" give away, compared to our Select Match barrels? Perhaps not any! The point is, whether or not there is any real difference in the accuracy potential between the Match and Select Match grades, the really demanding shooter must play it safe and go with the higher grade. In many cartridges and barrel twists, the accuracy difference between the two simply can't be detected. So unless you're gunning for one-hole groups or just demand the top of the line, the Match Grade barrel is your best choice for many forms of competitive shooting and for hunting varmints and big game. The Match Grade is completely stress relieved and fully warranted. The price of Match Grade stainless steel barrels includes hand lapping to a beautifully smooth surface. Chrome-moly can be lapped to a similar finish at an additional charge.

Both are available in all calibers, twists and contours.

Re: something new for my savage

Axeman, A #7 taper Shilen is a very stout barrel, You will have to either have it cut down in the shank area in order to have a barrel nut go on it, or have it headspaced off of a shoulder (conventionally) with out a barrel nut.

Like the 300WM in this pic...

The barrel channel in the stock had to be opened up in order to fit at all. This barrel had previously been on a short action and chambered in .308, it was not fun to carry.

This was the old set up, the Choate stock had clearance for the #7

Just letting you know some of the things you will have to decide on if you haven't already.

Good Luck,

Re: something new for my savage

so do you think its a large shank barrel or just larger than a norman small shank? im pretty sure i will just let someone do the fitting and skip buying the tools. i will grab the calipers and see if the channel needs opened up. the stock barrel is floated, maybe this will fit as well. thanks for the heads up

Re: something new for my savage

The Shilen S7 Savage contour is identical too the factory varmint/tactical barrels, starting out with 1.060" at the shank and tapering to .800" at the muzzle, So your good to go AXE

I think you'll be very happy with this setup, you'll have to let me know how it shoots when its complete.

Re: something new for my savage

All you need is the wrench and a headspace gauge, I would go for it. Best part of a savage. I would get the wrench from 1000YARDS here on the hide, pacific tool sells the headspace gauge.

Re: something new for my savage

ive seen several different wrenches, the one i liked most was one with the 1/2" square punched out so you can use a torque wrench. someone also posted a link to a rental place for the headspace guage. im still waiting for a few quotes. all the stuff i read creeps in my head while i think it over, lol. do i need to find TDC for the barrel? i will need to get the barrel marked with the caliber, its completely blank. usually if i think too much, i get locked up and have to step away from the project for a while. thats why my bronco has been sitting for the last year...

Re: something new for my savage

The wrench I mentioned is the one with the square drive, nice tool. Getting the barrel marked is up to you, you know what it is, but not a bad idea. Definitely if you sell it.

Re: something new for my savage

ive got one of those engraving pens. i guess i could use tracing paper or a stencil. no way id sell it. i hate my XD and i cant make myself sell that. the barrel is stainless, my action is black. im not sure whats going on past getting prices now. then looking it all over and figuring out what to do next and in what order. id really like to find someone close and local that has a tuned action. and a pile of money covering a naked redhead with freckles and green eyes...
