I’m planning on sending my specialist back to DW to mount a RDS along with a couple other tweaks. Originally was planning on a RMR using their BUIS system. However, I really want the larger size of the SRO along with the lowest mount possible putting the “objective” basically on the slide. Not interested in keeping the back up sights as this is just a range toy. Any SH members have experience doing this or recommended smiths? Obviously it’s a pretty dramatic cut on a quality handgun…

I would talk to this guy: https://brekkecustom.com/index.php/product/optics-adapter-plate-1911-2011/

My personal opinion, based on my context as a someone who uses a handgun as a last resort defensive weapon, is that back up sights are not really necessary. I can make CoM hits with just the empty window of the optic at any distance that a reasonable person can claim self defense.

If you're a soldier or a cop, that answer changes.

Thanks for the recommendation. I didn’t really care for the 1911 mount but his CZ mount was exactly what I was looking for. He turned it around in just over a week and I’m happy with the results...
