Hey guys I just bought a Stag Arms model Stag-15 5.56 AR-15. I know nothing about it. I bought it because it was a good deal from a buddy. This is my first AR style rifle. It has a front sight, but no rear sights. I need a cheap optic or sight option. I know this rifle will shoot better than I can, I just want to be able tp bust a milk jug at 150 is about all the demand I will have out of it. Help me. What sights/optic should I get. I am am on a budget and want to be as cheap as possible. I know you usually get what you pay for though.

Should I go with iron sights until I get used to the rifle? Or should I go ahead and look for some kind of red dot sight?

Thank you in advance for your help

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

I dont really know. As cheap as I can get by with. I looked on Cheaper than Dirt, and found some iron sights for 20-120 bucks. I would really like a red dot type sight though.

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

Your buddy didn't have the detachable carry handle? If you want to return it to stock setup contact your buddy and ask for the carry handle. Or you could contact the manufacturer for a scratch and dent sale. Solid iron sights will take you FAR, farther and truer than a cheap $50 red dot.

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

No, no carry handle. Dammit. I have been looking around on the net and I think I want to go with iron sights, and maybe a light of some sort. What would be the easiest to mount, and operate? Advice on iron sights?

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

You could probably pick up a removable carry handle for about 60 bucks off of AR-15.com . I am with Murloc as far as picking up a set of Irons instead of pissing your money away buying some POS red dot . If you can step up to say 150-175 bucks check out the classifieds or SWFA's sample list for a lightly used Vortex strikefire with mount .

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

I think you all(and what I have read here) have talked me into some iron sights. Where is a good/cheap place to buy them? I think 150 might be a bit much right now. I added pics also. I think I got a good deal. I picked up the rifle just as it is in the pics for 600 bucks.

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

There are TONS of excellent sight options that won't break the bank and will allow you to accomplish hits on milk-jug/gallon jug size targets at 150yds or so as long as your abilities permit it.

Personally, if that is all you need from the rifle, I would opt for a fixed, non-folding back-up iron sight (BUIS) or a detachable carry handle since you already have a fixed front sight.

Skip the cheap airsoft and chicom knock-off crap from Cheaper Than Dog$hit. Try to find an A2-type sight (elevation and windage adjustable) that you can attached/remove as you want or pair up with a red-dot/holosight later on if you so desire. The other option, mentioned above, would be a detachable carry handle. Have a look through the AR15.com Equipment Exchange section (under Optics/Sights and Budget Optics/Sights) and see if you can find something that strikes your fancy/budget.

Here is an example of the fixed (non-folding) detachable A2 sight setup I mentioned earlier:

Don't forget that since its MidwayUSA, you can use one of the Hide discount codes for an additional savings of between $5-10 depending on your total order.

Good luck!!

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

For the purposes and financial constraints you have described Weston, I'd agree on goin with some iron sights.

After reading this conversation, I just did a Google shopping search for "iron sights for ar-15" and got all sorts of results through the 40-150 dollar range (prior to shipping).

Also consider - if you go with some small back up iron sight (BUIS) style rear sight, then if you ever upgrade to some red dot type of sight, you can leave the BUIS on that flat top as well. Then you really get full use out of the BUIS as opposed to a carrying handle which you will take off and leave in the house once you go to a red do sight.

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

I recommend going with a quality rear site from Midwest Industries, Troy, or similar. If you plan on eventually picking up a red dot (I'd plan on it if I were you) I'd go with a flip up sight so that you will have cowitness.

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help

Go check out the primary arms website. They have some excellent (in my opinion) red dot sights that come with mount for 60-100 bucks. But I'm not an iron sights kind of guy. I have a detachable handle with rear sight that just sits in the safe.

I agree with what most are saying here, you have no need of a red dot sight as of yet, definitely grab a flip-up rear BUIS, you don't have to go with any expensive brand ones just pick one up for $40-$50. Then at least you can get out and hit those milk jugs, get a bunch of time behind the rifle, and while you are doing that you can save of $$$ for a decent red dot sight, EOTech, Aimpoint, ETC. Congrats on the new rifle & Good Shooting

Consider a BDC (bullet drop compensating sight), like the Matech BUIS. With this sight, you can establish a 200/300 BSZ, and, in addition, be able adjust for KD targets to 600 meters. In other words, this sight makes your rifle versatile. With sight set to 300 meters, you'll have a maximum ordinate of 7 to 10 inches at 150 meters. So, using a center of mass hold, you can get good hits on UKD E targets out to about 400 meters where you'll be about 20 inches low. For KD targets, the bullet drop compensating function can be used to get good hits with appropriate wind and/or slope favors out to about 600 meters. This sight new costs about $160.00 but is worth every penny as it can get the job done where others would not. This sight is so good I use it as the primary sight for my SDMR, rather than the detachable carry handle BDC sight, which cannot be re-set for 200 meters, or adjusted as quickly for KD targets as can the Matech.

Thanks for your help guys. PM Replied to Lunchbox. I have another stupid (new AR shooter) question. What about a scope? How would I mount it. I have an extra that will mount to the rifle but it looks to me like the front sight tower will be in the way? Would it work? Do I need some kind of riser?

A little background.
I'm new to AR's, not to a rifle though. Fairly accomplished bolt action shooter, pistols and what nots. This is just my first AR and I am really hungry for info. Thanks again for all your help guys.

Get a unimount, something like the Nikon 223. It will be the proper height to assure a muscular relaxed stockweld, and will allow for proper eye relief as well. Be sure the scope is one which is focused to a distance that the front sight base will be so out of focus it will appear to have disappeared.

Re: Stag-15 New shooter need help **pics added**

I'm a big proponent of being familiar with iron sights, so I would get those first and learn to shoot with it.

cheapest I would go would be the magpul Mbus sights. The troy's or midwest industries are good for metal sights too.

As for red dot, I would look through as many as i could, shoot with them if you can. Eotechs, aimpoints, Fastfire, doc ops, acog, etc. lots of choices and types.

You can co-witness a red dot and even though you'll see the front post sight through the optic, you won't notice it at all when shooting.

I run a fixed front sight with a carry handle with a 1/3 cowitness aimpoint T-1.

Goodluck.

I put a new redfield on my stag a few months ago and love it. But i started out with iron sights to get used to the gun and upgraded a little at a time.
