Steel Target Question

When you guys are hanging steel targets from chains, whether they are 5x5, 12x12, 9x9 etc, are you guys wrenching down on the bolts that go through the steel and chain? Or are you keeping some sort of "play" between the bolt, nut, and chain so everything can move freely? Im asking because if you are wrenching down on the bolts, does this give the steel any less of a "ding" when hit compared to if the bolt, nut, and chain can move freely?

Works great for me. </div></div>

Re: Steel Target Question

I tried both wrenching down on the bolts that go through the steel and chain and also keeping them loose to where there is some play in them. Well, it does make a difference in a 6x6" steel. When then the bolt is wrenched down, there is no "ping" when the steel is hit. But when the bolts are loose, the steel pings like a bell. Crazy huh?

Re: Steel Target Question

Not trying to be off topic, but what size and grade chains are you guys using to hang 1/2 AR500 plates? or any better recommendations to avoid schrapnel blowing up the chains?

Re: Steel Target Question

Chain is a Very TEMP Solution for hanging normal plates.
Some type of reinforced hose, be it fire hose, Irrigation hose etc. is the way to go... Every time you paint, Tighten the bolts. It will last a Long time.

Re: Steel Target Question

Your not off topic..

Its the biggest shit they sell at Lowes. Grade 5, its like $3.60 per foot. Pretty heavy duty stuff.. Its NOT overly big dont get me wrong.

Here is the same chain I am using on this target. This is the other half of my project. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2694572

Re: Steel Target Question

I use chain now but will eventually switch over to some type of fire-hose, strapping, etc.

FYI - Carabiner clips definitely won't hold up to heavy calibers...
