Got some armor plating and was told that it was AR 500, 3/8 inch thick.
So I had a friend cut a 18X24 piece, I welded up a frame drilled a couple of holes hung it from some chain and stuck it out at 600 yards.

223 left tiny dimples, thought I was good for the 300 WM. The 300 blew right through it like butter. AR500, my ass!

I just love the suggestions I got:
double it up, it will hold
did you do a spark test? WTF is a spark test? I hit it with a grinder and yes there were sparks

So now my questions: For 300 WM what do I really need to go get?
1/2" 500? 5/8" 500?

Re: Steel Targets AR500- NOT!

3/8" thick AR-500 is plenty for a 300 WM at 600.

I've got some AR-400 that is 3/8" thick that has taken hits from 260 and 243 AI at 200.

Plasma cut will give you about 1/2" of heat effected zone, laser cut that goes to about 1/10" for heat effected zone, water jet has no heat effected zone.

Clearly, the chunck of steel you were given is not AR 500 or armor plate.

+1 on the 3/8 I have one "larue size targets from LV shooter, at 300 an your 300wm wont leave a mark unless you hit the edge, I pound mine with everything 300wsm 270 30-06 308 223 ball amo fmj hunting amo all the same effect just a grey splatter mark

Check with Wideners .... I think they had some ar500 on sale for a decent price. I was going to pick up some I just never got around to ordering it.

Re: Steel Targets AR500- NOT!

I have 3/8" AR500 targets. It holds up to the 50 BMG M33 ammo at 1000 yards ( a slight dent on the back, but otherwise okay). Don't have any problem with the 338 LM at a 1000 either. Having said that, if you are going 600 yards or less, then the 5/8" probably will last longer, although I think the 1/2" will survive as well.

Re: Steel Targets AR500- NOT!

I have some mild steel targets in 5/8" that I have hit as close as 600 yds, & only a very stout bullet will even dent it much. I let a guy hit one with his 300 RUM & 180 TSX's, & they only left a slight ding in it @ 700 yds. The 208 A-Max usualy use will only leave the slightest ding @ 600. At 700+ they just scratch off the paint.

Re: Steel Targets AR500- NOT!

I have Kurt's #1 in 1/2" for use with my .308 and .223. It barely shows any wear after 1000+ rounds. If I was planning to buy another one I would go with the 3/8" instead. The 3/8" would be more reactive at 600+ yards.

Re: Steel Targets AR500- NOT!

Arizona armor was selling sappi sized plates of ar500 for 100 bucks a pop at the last gun show they were only about 1/4 " thick though

Re: Steel Targets AR500- NOT!

It was probably T1 or something else, not real AR500.

Also be careful on how its cut. Flame and plasma cutting will soften the target around the area being cut. All the MGM targets are laser cut minimize heat transfer into the target.

I have a MGM BC target made from 3/8" AR500 and it will take .223 hits all day long at 35 yards. It leaves tiny dimples, but at that distance its expected.

Some of the larger 1/2" MGM targets will stop .50 cal at 300 yards with no problems.

Re: Steel Targets AR500- NOT!

I have several steel targets made out of 3/8" Tribraze wear plate and the spec sheet says that it has an AR rating of 475 to 500+. I have cut and welded all over these targets and the heat has not hurt the metal in anyway that I have seen. They have been shot hundreds of times with everything up to 300 WM at different ranges starting at 400 yards. The biggest problem that I have seen that damages the metal is having it mounted solid where it can't move to absorb some of energy.

what pills you shooting ?

I have some 3/8 mild steel and a 300wm will not go threw it a 570 yards unless its AP..
