I've been invited to a farm close by that will allow ranges out to 600 yards. I'd like to pick up a couple steel targets and have them in hand by June 25th...I know there are a couple regulars selling targets here on the hide. Who has the best chance of having a set that meet my time and range spec and a reputation of delivering withour grief?

Targets will be shot at with 7WSM, .260 and .223 out past 300 yards, so velocity on even the 223 should be down in the modest range.

Re: steel targets

Are you wanting custom, or stock targets?

osuarchitech will work with you on custom stuff, BUT his turn around time is usually around 2 weeks or so to custom cut them.

I dont know about anyone else. I have had no problems dealing with Ryan in the past, and I keep bugging him for a brochure to take to my home range with me to help advertise for him.

Re: steel targets

I know of a company out of arkansas that builds some there rifle target is about a 6" swinging disc on a fram for around $65. I have shot them myself with a 338 lapua at 100 yards with no pass through. If your interested PM me and when I get to work monday I will send you there info. They are in stock and they ship fairly quick from my past dealings with them.

I am in the steel business, but cannot sell on the Hide. Why don't you find a small welding job shop in your area buy some scrap steel from them if you don't have a drill or a torch or plasma cutting machine have them blow a couple holes in the top corners and pound in steel posts and hang them with chain.

This is what we do, nothing fancy but works well, use either A-36 mild steel 3/4 to 1 inch thick for the bigger calibers or use a T-1 steel and you can go thinner but it costs more and most people don't carry it.
Just my thought.

Re: steel targets

Like he said, 3/4"-1". I use a 1" plate right now, nothing short of a .50 is going through that thing.

Find a local shop or steel yard, buy rem steel, and a bit of fab and you'll be good to go.

Re: steel targets

I have broken a 1" thick by 8" round piece of steel with my 7WSM that was only shot at 600 yards.

Re: steel targets

I've dealt with both LV Steel and osuarchitech, and had good luck and quick turnarounds from both.
I've shot my fair share of mild steel too... railroad tie plates. They pit... so don't shoot them close; they splatter bullet fragments in less predictable patterns. They have extra holes in them, they eventually break, they won't take 338lm, but the price was right.

Re: steel targets

Ive been shooting a 3/4" thick piece of cold rolled steel at 600 yards for about 2 years now. Nothing has damaged it yet. From 223 all the way to 338LM. I know if I hit it with the 408 it would probably fly off its hooks!

If you can find someone willing to cut you a piece, cold rolled steel is going to withstand a lot. Our machine shop repairs large equipment and we have tons of it laying around, its how we line our loader buckets and dozer blades.

Re: steel targets

Good selection of 1/2" 500 Brinell steel targets. Usually in stock. Very good prices. Call and ask about the shipping and availability. Good folks I ordered from them for years.

I also like these targets. The flat design makes them easy to stack for transportation. http://www.mk1tactical.com/MK1_Tactical/Rifle_Targets.html

Las Vegas steel targets are very good as well. I own three of Mark's products. www.lvsteel.com

Take a close up pic of that steel looks like cast or forged to me it's nothing like A-36.

A-36(cold rolled steel)is soft won't fragment bullets but large calibers will penetrate. T-1 is hard won't dent and will last hundreds of years we shoot as big as 50bmg and the bullet doesn't fragment at all.

The way that broke tells me it was hardened steel, I meant punch through, not break.

Re: steel targets

I could careless what steel it's made out of. It was free, a friend gave it to me. There aren't any dents in the steel. First time out I put a nice crack on the steel plate, you can see the rust partially where it broke. I use AR500 plate now. So far so good. I just thought it was pretty impressive to actually break a piece of steel that thick. We use to shoot some thin mild steel. 308 would put a nice dent in them at 600, the magnums would just make it look like swiss cheese.
