Stock issue?!?

I don't know if this belongs here or the gun smithing section but this one seems to be visited more often... Feel free to move it if necessary moderators. I just purchased a Bell and Carlson Fully adjustable tactical medalist for my Remington 700. Overall I am very impressed with the features, quality, comfort, etc. Definitely what I was looking for. I did come across an issue though when the action is in the stock. The action doesn't appear centered in the stock. The barrel is rubbing on one side of the forend while the action is rubbing on the opposite side of the stock. I tried loosening and retightening it to see if maybe it shifted when I torqued it down but same result. I plan on bedding it with devcon but don't know if the problem will still exist. The barrel free floats as promised other than that area at the end of the stock. I don't want to start carving at a brand new stock if there's an easier solution/ explanation. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions or solutions?

Re: Stock issue?!?

Sounds like the v block isn't properly set in the stock. I'd take pictures and send them to B&C(or where ever you bought it from) requesting a new stock. A little off to the side is one thing, but if its rubbing on opposite sides from barrel to action- it sounds like it wasn't made correctly.

Re: Stock issue?!?

Wow really didn't want to hear that haha I should clarify that the rubbing is just minimal and only when I loosened the screws to try to adjust. Not heavy rubbing, just a light rub. It appears that the upper part of the stock where the action is rubbing is a little off-shape which is causing the action to be pushed over a bit, therefore causing the barrel to push against the stock (explaining the barrel rubbing on the opposite side). The instructions that came with do state that minute sanding could be possible. Just don't want to do something I can't undo and regret it.

Re: Stock issue?!?

I just sent a B&C Medalist, 2 back to Bell & Carlson. The action rocked on a high point in the bedding block and it pulled tight to the right side making contact down the entire length of the barrel when the mounting screws were tightened.

The milling for the bottom metal was visibly off center line and offset from the pillars. I didn't see how skim bedding would fix this so I sent back for warranty eval.

Re: Stock issue?!?

I called b&c as well. Actually really nice people... Good customer service. They advised me that a lot of times in production the paint/material builds up in certain spots which causes it to sit off center a little. They also insured me that taking minute amounts (anything less than the width of a credit card) off the stock would not void the warranty. They told me to try skimming the area that was rubbing and see if that helps and if not I could ship it back and the warranty would take care of it. They also said that if i was uncomfortable with it I could ship it back either way for them to do it. Well with the certainty that I would not void the warranty I was in no way scured to customize haha A few scrapes with an exacto knife and some light sanding and its good to go. Maybe not something that would be necessary for a mcmillian or stock like that but for the few hundred I saved and the overall quality, I'm pleased. Thanks for the feed back everyone. Maybe my dilemma can help someone else too.

Re: Stock issue?!?

I took mine apart this evening...
I ran a straight edge from action hole to action hole, it points off to the right by the time it leaves the end of the stock. Confirms that the block is off in the stock. or the holes are one.

I asked this question on my thread as well but I don't see how bedding it will make it straight if the holes are off.
