Been planning on ordering this rifle after a lot of reading here comparing the 5R and the 700P/ LTR. However the stock looks different to me on impact guns and buds gunshop when compared to the ones some guys have posted pics of on this site. I realize they sometimes use stock photos, but has the stock changed recently?

The best part of this rifle is that my grandpa gave me some scrap iron from the farm, and when i got it sold, i had enough for the rifle. Optics is another story however...

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

Personally I'd call both of them to verify which stock is on there if your planning on buying from one or the other just in case.
From the pictures I see they look the same although there are different variations including with threaded barrels.

My wife's family's over in Pullman, great place and go Cougs !

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

I have a 5r and did notice a difference with the stock it came with and another 5r I handled at the range. Mine had a pretty large palm swell and the other one I saw was more normal like the sporter stock that came on my LTR.

+1 on verifying which stock is on there. If anything you can sell it for around 250-280ish which would be a good excuse to get a McMillan.

BTW the 5r and the LTR I have shoot pretty damn well you will be pleased with either one but your shoulder will feel the difference with the lighter LTR.

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

I contacted remington and they said that the stock on the 5R is the same as the one on the 700 VS SF II which looks more like the right one. Should ship by the 25th.

HS Precision Stock Model Numbers:

PST012- Standard on Rem 700 P Short Action 2.6 lbs, oal: 33.2 inches

PST086- Standard on Rem 700 LTR Short Action 2.1 lbs, oal: 28.5 inches

PSV096- Standard on Rem 700 5R Milspec Short Action 2.5 lbs, oal 31 inches

PSV002- Standard on the Rem 700 VS Short action. 2.5 lbs, oal 31 inches
(Was the standard on the 5R before they switched to the PSV096.)

The PSV002 and 096 are the same weight and overall length. Differences are:
096 has palm swell, 002 does not.
096 has wider flatter forearm (tactical stye), 002 has slimmer rounder forearm (sporter style)
096 has two sling studs on forearm, 002 has one

All stocks have standard length of pull at 13.5 inches. All stocks are made to the same standards with the same materials.

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

The Remington 5R used to come with a black with grey webbing HS Precision and one sling stud on the forearm. The newer ones come with a black w/ green webbing HS Precision Stock and two sling studs on the forearm.

Old (I hope Randall is okay with me borrowing his picture):

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

This is a 5r take off with a SPS Tactical in .308, it has a palm swell but not too large. I paid $200 delivered. From what I read, the LTR has a shorter stock.

This is the best explanation and a rather detailed one. Thanks for posting. I had a question about this myself and this post answered it.

I wont be selling the stock just yet. I am going to save up for some nightforce glass, (for now a leupy VX III with M1s will have to do) and eventually I would like an ACIS for it. It will likely go up in the for sale section at that point, if I ever get to 100 posts that is.

+1 - I also have an A1-3 and I like it much better than the original 5R stock (palm swell too large for me).

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

Tango_Down, happy I could help. I had a lot of questions when I was buying my first rifle and ended up calling HSP and talking with them. I'm happy I did, as I've realized since that I wasn't the only one with the same questions.

I will tentatively third the A1-3 as I have one order, but have never handled one.

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

The newer 5R stock is decent minus the palm swell. I had mine rebedded and recrowned. It will now shoot in the mid to high .3"s for five shots with hand loads or FGMM 168. I wish my stock had the grip of the LTR.

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

The new 5R's definitely use the H-S Precision PSV096.

I didn't care for the color of the factory stock, so I sold it and ordered a new PSV096 from Stocky's in Tactical Black. The only difference is that the recoil pad says "H-S Precision" vs. "Remington", and the swivel studs were actually tight right out of the box.

Some folks don't like the palm swell, but once I became accustomed to a 3-finger grip, I really like this stock.

Re: stock on remmy milspec 5R

Mine had the green stock when I bought it last year but I just changed colors. I like to be a little different

Here is MY new 5r, debating on painting the barrel and action coyote brown.

You will love the rifle it's a shooter. I came in 2nd on my first 600 yard match with it and in 1st in the next 2. I plan to have the action blueprinted before long

I would not worry about the Nightforce scope for now if money is a little tight. The leupy scope will be plenty and focus more on shooting than anything. I have a $300 konus M30 on mine and have no problem competing. It's not on near the same level but IMO shooting skills are more important. Put the money in bullets!
