I have been looking at a few diffrent stock companies and I was wanting to see what you guys would suggest for my Rem. 700 SPS Varmint in .243 I primarily use this rifle for calling coyotes and bench shooting. I would like a stock thats not too heavy so I can get threw the woods with it fairly easily but I also want something accurate. The two stocks I have been looking are the HS Precision Remington 700, Police, Short Action, BDL, Varmint Barrel Contour and the Bell and Carlson Light Tactical. Im completly open to everyones opinion about these two stocks and other you think you would be a good choice. This is my first Rem. 700 so Im not really aware of whats out there for this rifle.

Thanks alot,
Ryan

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

You could likely frind one of the HS stocks here for around $200-$225. I've had both stocks you mentioned. I think the B&C stock is a bit too square for my liking. However, both are good stocks.

To the upper end of your price range however are some great stocks, like a Manners or McMillan. You'll have to be patient, but they do arise from time to time in that price.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Since I do not have tp worry about rappelling down the side of a mountain or HAlo jumping out of any aircraft I like the stocks on the lower end of the price range.
I have had VERY good results with 3 differant the Bell and Carlson Stocks. They are drop in torque down and GTG if you really want you can skim bed them.

My savage would in 223 would turn in .4 inch groups and my remmy 700 would due about 3/4 MOA(hunting Rifle) the 10/22 well not so great but it has a stock barrel and trigger.

The ones I used for the bolt guns are in the $200 range.

hope this helps

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

I have the B&C light tactical on my sps tactical. I think it is a excellent stock for the money. I bought mine through brownells with a C&R ffl discount.

I like that its grip is a little longer verticaly than the HS stock I had on my CZ 550 Kevlar.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

I would go with the B&C stock. I have two of the light tacticals, and two HS stocks. I prefer the B&C stock for the palm swell and better inletting. The light tactical is not square like the medalist.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

I had an HS Precision, but I sold it because it had too much palm swell for me.

I bought the B&C Light Tactical, and I like it much better (and I believe it was a bit cheaper if memory serves).

I'd be surprised if you were disappointed with either.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

I am very happy with my B&C. It's a little heavier and bulkier than the factory POS stock on the SPS; but, well worth it in both comfort of shooting and accuracy.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Check your PM's I have a nice HS Precision that would work well, not the larger palm swell style from the 5R, it was removed from a Rem700.
I ran that for a couple years and bought a A2 stock recently. Got that for under $500, McMillan stocks are always a great choice.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

I had the HS from a 5r and it was a great stock. Now, I have a McMillian HTG and love it. The palm swell in the HS made me feel like the trigger was too close. The Mcmillian has the feel of a longer trigger reach, similiar to the factory Remmy stock. Also have a Remmy VLS really like the feel of it in the trigger reach also.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

Will not go wrong with the B&C light tactical, good stock for the money. Many to choose from out there on the high end.

Re: Stock suggestion for SPS Varmint

been waiting on my B&C a2 from stockys for 7 weeks now(sps-v). my buddys came in last week for his 10fp savage. the stock is alot boxier and bigger then I expected and it's not light. Feels really good when I pull up to it, and will suit my needs just fine especially for <$250 That would be my reccomendation just expect to wait!

there is a new thread on this topic weekly with mostly the same feedback thought I would chime in this time
