Straight vs. swept bolt

Re: Straight vs. swept bolt

Nope, and it keeps the bolt handle from hitting the first knuckle for your trigger finger . . . if you have long fingers and a short trigger reach.

+1 My Surgeon 591 Scalpel is the same way.

Hey guys I dug up this thread instead of starting a new one. Anybody using a straight bolt handle in a stock with swept inlet? Pics? I'm wondering if it'll look goofy in my HS takeoff stock. I'm thinking of using the PTG straight handle with either their round ball or teardrop knob

When putting a straight bolt handle like the Surgeon, Big Horn Arms and some times the PTG, you will need to inlet the bolt handle cut out slightly. Just drop the barreled action into the stock and secure it, work the bolt up and down and look for any kind of wear marks on the stock. If you do not have any, you are most likely fine. The bolt handle should always be limited by movement by the action, not the stock.

I prefer the PTG swept back handles on Rem 700's and I like the Swept Back handles on our Alpha 11 action. It is just a preference.

PTG Swept Bolt handle on a one piece bolt or two piece bolt.

I used a PTG single pc bolt with a straight handle that I picked up from Mark on my last BOP 223rem build and really like it!

I’m new to this forum so wasn’t sure how people felt about reviving really old threads. I’m doing it anyway. I recently purchased a Tikka T3x Tac A1 in 6.5CM and I’m looking to change out the bolt handle and shroud because it looks and feels cheap in my opinion. I’m leaning towards Sterk, but after doing a lot of searching, it looks like most people prefer the swept back bolt handle rather than the straight. I’m looking to do target shooting and possibly some PRS matches. Just curious to see what the majority of people like to use. Is it literally just personal preference? Or are there advantages/disadvantages to each that I’m unaware of?

somebody went through the hassle of getting quantitative results as far as how fast the bolt can be ran with a standard tikka bolt handle vs a Sterk swept handle. It’s on the forums somewhere. The sterk was faster though technically but it’s not something that’s going to make or break timing out a stage.

Me personally, I liked the swept sterk handle on my tikka that I had as I was planning on getting an AI. That didn’t happen and now I have a straight bolt handle on my impact and like it a lot. It comes down to personal preference mainly though

FWIW this may be a record necro of a thread.

I did see that thread of quantitative results with the Sterk. I noticed it was for the swept back handle. I figured swept vs straight was just personal preference. Just wanted to hear other people’s opinions. Thanks for your input.
