I made an idiot mistake. Loaded a couple hundred small something primers into my RCBS APS strips for Pro2000 loader a few months ago and now I forget whether they were pistol or rifle primers.

If anyone has both CCI small pistol and small rifle primers (basic ones not match) and can tell me if there is any difference between the two that would be great. I seem to be out of small rifles and nobody local has them right now.

Thanks

Re: Stupid mistake, discerning small rifle and pistol

I don't have a lot of CCI primers on hand but 300 LP and 350 LPM are yellow in color under the anvil. 250 LRM are red in color under the anvil.

Re: Stupid mistake, discerning small rifle and pistol

CCI 500 (small pistol) are orange under the anvil, CCI 400 (small Rifle) are yellow. I have both and just checked.

Re: Stupid mistake, discerning small rifle and pistol

Use them for plinking in your .357 mag revolver ammo. Back down the charge .5 grains or so. Won't hurt the pistol. The thicker/harder cup may not fire in a striker fired pistol. If pistol primers, they may leak and damage your bolt face. JMHO

Re: Stupid mistake, discerning small rifle and pistol

I think I figured it out, glancing at the two they look 100% identical, however I noticed on the rim of the cup the pistol primers are smooth and somewhat shiny whereas the rifle primers are kindof a rough finish and might look a hair thicker.

As far as I could tell thats the only difference visually, they really should make them all different colors that would make the most sense....aside from the moronic consumers like myself that get them mixed up actually keeping them separate and labeled.

I guess thats why RCBS sells all different colors for their APS strips.

Everyone shooting IPSC used to load .38 super with small rifle primers. Probably still do, I havent been into that in some years.

Re: Stupid mistake, discerning small rifle and pistol

the only diffrrence between small pistol and rifle primers is the hardness of the cup, you can use SR in pistol but I wouldn's use SP in rifles.
hope this helps.

Re: Stupid mistake, discerning small rifle and pistol

I would have to ask myself,..is it worth a case of "Super Face"

SRP in a handgun case good SPP in a rifle case = Super Face (pierced primers gas flow back with bits of primer at high velocity. in your face )

set em aside and load them into a small pistol caliber they will work fine...

All my .357 .38Super .40 etc. are loaded with SRP with the exception of the .38Spl. 148 HBWC for my S&W 52 those get the SPP

When in doubt,...toss it out
guns and body parts are way more expensive than a few hundred primers..
