Stupid question, substituting 168 SMK with 168AMAX

For a .308 Win out of a 20" barrel.

I'm out of SMKs but have a box of AMAX bullets sitting here. For a local sniper match with no real prizes outside bragging rights am I gonna see a huge difference running the same load with the AMAX vs the SMKs? I've got all my dope worked out w SMKs. The longest shot will likely be 500yds at an 8" target. Big deal or do I really need to go hunt down some SMKs?

You will se a change in POA/POI. If the SMK's are working for you I sould stick with them. Midway has them on sale now I think!

You could use them but I would load test a few first.

I figured as much but I had those on hand and it's tough to source SMKs locally. Not sure if mail order will arrive in time. I guess I'll do some calling around.

The AMAX will shoot well.

Load em up with the same charge as the SMK's and re-zero.

If it's a tactical match and you don't have a KYL stage then you should be fine.

You are going to be a few inches higher with the AMAX so run your load through JBM and print out a new dope card.

I use matches as a learning experience. So load em up and learn something.

You should be ok. As LWUSMC said, at distance you'll need a little less elevation, adn you can pop out a new card from JBM to cover that.

Another thing you may want to try is to see if anyone in your AO has 168 Nosler Custom Comp bullets. They fly the same as SMK's in my 308.

I just brought 3 boxes of 500 168gr SMK bullet bulk packs from Adam.
They were on his "shelf" and GTG.
Adam is the man.

As good in my experience. PM Rob01 or Nomad as they know the AMAX better than anyone. It's a fine bullet. SBR is right too as the Nosler kicks ass. The Hornady HPBT is also good too.
