i have a bob hart built 338 hart. i dont have time to reload so it is a pain to really try to work up loads. i am going to look at a styer ssg p2 in 308. i am told that you can fire federal national match ammo and get great results. cabelas wants $ 1500.00 for there styer. i though that was a little high, but if it will do the job what the heck. i am going to be shooting paper mostly. 80% of the time 300 yards or less. sometimes out to 800 yards. any help with this would be nice before i waste more money. i am buried up to my neck in this hart. bell and Carlson t-5 stock, long range Leupold 8 to 25. if i had time and new how to reload then i think the hart would work. it weighs a ton but i still took it deer hunting this year. it has no problems hitting a deer at 600 yds.

Re: styer ssg p 2 308 vs my 338 hart

I was wondering why all the Steyr questions were popping up, well there is my answer, Cabelas.

First off Steyrs have always been extremely accurate rifles, no question. And honestly anyone thinking of getting a "precision rifle' of any kind should only shoot Match ammo, whether from Federal or any other maker. For close in paper shooting, and by close I mean inside 600 yards, I recommend the casual shooter can use 168gr Match. Beyond 600 yards it is recommend you use a better match bullet whether that is the 155gr, 175gr or something like a 178gr... (Reloaders have other options)

Nothing wrong with a Steyr SSG, in 1989 it was the first rifle I bought when I left the USMC. Great rifle I still have it and it is very accurate. If you are not a tinkerer they are fine and will serve you well. If you want to use one rifle to progress in your shooting career it is limited. Upgrading a Steyr is very difficult, it's a foreign sports car and not a Chevy 350 like a Remington 700 is... for the shooter that wants to grow their rifle with them, the Steyr is not it.

But I get it now I was thinking why the heck are Steyr questions coming up... well here is my answer and honestly that is a fair price for a Steyr SSG.

Steyer SSG's were the 'premium' tactical precision rifle back when few other factory tactical precision rifles were available.

I shared an old pre-PII thin-barrel one with a friend in the 80's because neither of us could afford over a grand for just the rifle. The mags were, and remain, expensive. And the QD mounts were great back then; but now, and considering what else is available for mounting options, I would steer clear of them. The rifles do shoot, though!

The only problem with them is that it's difficult if not impossible to get the barrels off. So, if it's in .308 no problem, because the barrel will last forever, but I would pass on one in 243. And stay away from the 'tourist' trap double set triggers.

+1 you can go a lot of different directions with a Rem 700 based build or 700 rifle.

I've had my P-II for 8yrs. It has done everything I've needed it to. With 2000 plus rds down the tube it is still outstandingly accurate. I've run her in several midrange matches, taken whitetail deer and used it as everyday shooter. No complaints.
