I have a new Colt LE6920 M4 with a Geissele SSA-E trigger and have ordered a bipod and think it would shoot better with a free floating forearm. Any suggestions without breaking the bank?

Forgot to add that I do not want to alter the gas tube or the front sight.

On the entry-mid level...
Simple round tube like DPMS will do for $50. One can always drill a few venting holes and tap it for a small rail section. It works.
Midwest has some nice ones with a top rail for $120.
UTG-Pro rails are well cut for the money also around $110. This is not the airsoft stuff. These are made in the USA weapons grade with nice super rigid mounts.
Nordic makes a nice solid tube for $90 or so.
A few in between and then after that you get into the Troy, Seekings $160 to $180.
No need to spend more for the same functionality.

I put a Rock River Arms "Elite" forend on my M-4. Full float and it has an oval shaped, smooth grip just ahead of the receiver with four rails at the front. Makes it easy to install a QD bipod mount a flashlight, laser, and BUIS if desired. The oval grip fits the hand great and no need for rail covers to keep the glove from getting snagged.

As I recall it was around $150.

Deadshot2,

I don't see an "ELITE" listed on their web site. Is this it???? Is there any gun smithing needed? How does it get put on? Do I have to remove the front sight first?

That is for mid length gas. You should look at Daniel defense 7.0 lite for carbine. Either way you will have to remove the front sight to install any 1 piece hand guard.

Check out the drop-in Delta rail from Troy:

tickled pink,

I'm using the YHM "Smooth" rail (YHM 5000) on my 6920. It is notched for retaining the factory FSH, has a full length rail on top with 2.5" rails at 3,6, and 9 o'clock - perfect for a bi-pod and illuminator(s). The tube is pre-drilled for adding rails anywhere on the tube. Installation requires removal of FSH and replacing the delta ring/barrel nut assembly with YHM's proprietary barrel nut. It is a well designed full-float handguard built for hard use.

That's a newer version. Mine doesn't have the extra holes in the rail area. Yes, the front sight has to go while installing but can be replaced. I just went with a rail type gas block and put a flip up H-K style front sight on it.

There's just too many to list without knowing your price range and expectations. Now for my money, and leaving the front sight tower, I might pick up a Fortis REV Free Float Rail System - CAR Cutout.

I personally wouldnt do that to a 6920 unless you needed the rail space it puts in front of the A2 sight and can't swing a 1 piece unit that requires the FSB removal.

As long as your are shooting a bullet your carbine likes, accuracy should be AoK. The accuracy will only be marginally improved at best out to the effective range of a carbine by free floating the rail. If you aren't going to be shooting 69 grain + match ammo, I doubt you will see the difference

if you want a plug and play rail that is inexpensive and has been proven time and again, look into a knights armament RAS. You can find authentic ones new for about $150, can be installed in 5 minutes or less and will be plenty solid.

Crosshair,

Is this the one you suggest? It is pricy, but attaches without removing anything except the original forearm.

Yep, that's the one I was thinking of, except that you'd need the carbine version, not the mid-length for a 6920. I hate to recommend something I haven't personally run (the delta version), but the regular troy alpha rails I've used have been great. That price does seem steep though.

Jdr724's idea may be a slick way to go also, and he is most likely right in that you may not see a drastic improvement in accuracy with a FF. Only experimenting will tell.

In my opinion and it is only that, spend the money to get the rail you want. If any of yall are like me, you buy something you dont really want or buy it because its cheaper when you should've simply waited and saved and got the rail or whatever part you wanted in the first place. Personally go with Daniel Defense! Their rails are worth every penny! Dont go with KAC! You are only paying for Reed's name, thats it. Geissele makes a really nice rail as well. They are expensive yes, but again you pay for what you get!

Worse yet, not only did you buy something you really didn't want to begin with, eventually you buy what you did. In the end you pay a whole lot more than if you'd just did it right from the beginning.

Ask me how I know :( :(

BTW, this advice applies to wives too.

Pricey, but they work and come in all shapes and sizes: the KAC rails. They're mostly all I use anymore. They make several different kinds, from the older, classic tube rail versions to the new URX versions. I like 'em all so far, but the older ones I've used for ten years and they've never let me down, not even on a .50Beowulf. I really like the rail covers, they feel "natural", since I'm not a fan of holding bare rails. Theirs slide and clip on, and you can cover pretty much every rail you aren't using making it more of a normal handguard. I like that. Certain URX forearms you just bolt on the rails and grip panels where you want 'em, they're otherwise stripped. One URX has rails on it, but also has the front flip sight built in.

I think the army switched over from KAC to Daniel Defense for the rails on their new SPR rifles, FWIW. They also used the carbon fiber PRI tube for awhile too.

I always thought the JP Ent. VTAC looked good, but I never got around to using it.
