Suppressors Suppressed 338 Rifle Questions

Re: Suppressed 338 Rifle Questions

I dont know if your powder will burn up enough in that barrel. Plus your velocity will be signifigantly reduced.

It will be much louder too.

What is your application?

Maximum distance you will shoot?

Re: Suppressed 338 Rifle Questions

Well, I have a Weatherby 340 Mag and thought I would use this suppressor for a pig blaster but the 26" barrel + the can are more than I care to pack to the field. That said, let me rephrase- What types of bolt guns are most commonly used with suppression in mind? It seems a 26" barrel is excessive.
Thanks again for your insght-

Re: Suppressed 338 Rifle Questions

I shoot one 338 LM with 22" barrel and the other has a 24". I would go no shorter and I will deal with the longer rifle with suppressor attached, for the reliability and accuracy.

Re: Suppressed 338 Rifle Questions

Cut it down to 18" and use a reflex supressor that is about 12" long. It will add perhaps 8" to your overall length putting you right back to your original 26" length.

You are not likely to get that 340 WM loaded to a subsonic speed with all that case capacity to deal with. I assume you intend to shoot supersonic loads but with a reduced muzzle report. You will of course have the supersonic crack of the bullet flight.

I was kind of surprised at the growing number of folks that buy supressors to shoot on full house rounds. I didnt understand the mindset at the time, but it makes more sense to me now. The accuracy and effective distance of a supressed subsonic rifle round is ridiculously reduced as compared to its supersonic counterpart.

On a supersonic rifle, a supressor makes a great muzzle brake and flash hider while significantly reducing the muzzle report. The bullet flight is loud, but it is very difficult to determine the origin of the shot. Some velocity may be lost (a few hundred fps) but the overall effectiveness (accuracy and energy) of the round is still there.
