Hey guys, got a question for you. My Desert Tactical SRS .338 will be here on Wednesday. I am going to be putting a suppressor on it, and I need to know the best way to go. My budget is around $800. If I absolutely need to spend more I will, but as of right now I have 800. I am also going to be getting a 260 Remington conversion for the rifle and also a 308. You thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Suppressor for DTA .338

Well, I don't have mine yet, but I sent my paperwork off for a YHM Phantom 338 QD about 3 weeks ago.

It fits your budget, and their are two QD mounts available for it. The standard bird cage style, and an actual "brake" style. I went with the brake.

Here is how it looked from the top when tightened up. As you can see, it is not lined up where it needs to be. Brakes with directional ports need to be timed so that they point the right direction. "Timing" a brake is done in a few ways. You can put the barrel in a lathe and cut the step behind the threads down. I chose to sand the back of the brake down so I could screw it on further.

I laid a chunk of 200 grit sandpaper on my bench and started sanding. I would sand in a circular motion, then rotate the mount 1/4 of a turn in my hand, then sand some more. I repeated this for about an hour until I took off enough material that resulted in the brake being tight just right of center. It's very close, but I wanted to leave a bit in case I needed to change something.

I won't have a report on how the suppressor sounds or shoots for another few months yet.

Re: Suppressor for DTA .338

Be advised: I have that "brake" on my TRG-42, the brake is just for looks and IMHO does squat for recoil attenuation. Having the YHM can on there does a world of good however.

If I am going someplace where I can't take the can, I'll put the Sako brake back on.

I'm not so concerned with how it sounds as how it shoots. I've got enough suppressors to know that they are all about the same in regard to sound suppression. However, the mark between a crap can and a good one is when they don't shift POI much and offer repeatable accuracy.

I've got a phantom 7.62 and love it. I'm hoping this 338 can will be of the same pedigree.

Finish the HTI... then maybe I'll look at the suppressor.

SHOT show debut's don't mean what they used to. Everyone is soft launching about 2-3 years ahead of schedule.

What is the price of the can?

What is it rated for?

When will I be able to get one from my dealer?

What kind of testing has been done?

What other info do you have?

Then why do I want one? I'm a civilian. Does your suppressor only work on guns in the act of shooting bad guys? All that statement means to me is that there will be a "our military uses it" surcharge of about 60%. See surefire suppressors, if you get my drift. Now if you are coming to the table with something completely unique and innovative as your SRS was... you'll do well with us lowly civilians.

I'm sure you realize you are entering a FIERCELY competitive marketplace, in which there isn't much room to begin with. Trying to get the SRS picked up by military contracts so you can rake in the taxpayer dough, and offering your own suppressor is logical. Otherwise you'd just be giving money away when trying to sell the "weapon system" to the military. It makes sense.

I hope you get there. Just remember the little civilian's role in getting you that far. Your stuff is not chump change, and a hell of a lot of civilians have bought them. ... and just because I'm a civilian, doesn't mean I always have been.

I hope its everything you say it will be when it does ship. From the outside looking in, it would seem that you are spread too thin.

I've heard this "not designed for civilians" language before. About the last thing I want to see is DTA becoming a "we're too important to work with civilians" shop. ... and while you'll be able to say "no way never" right now, once the big dollars start getting thrown around, most companies will renege on that statement in a heartbeat.

Re: Suppressor for DTA .338

I suspect he's using that term to say that it's made to a mil grade spec, not commercial durability which tends to be less.

Re: Suppressor for DTA .338

Perhaps I read too much into it... but I've seen this direction from companies before... and the "civilians" take it right up the keister when the big gov. contracts start getting worked on.

I have a can on the way from SAS for my DTA 338. They also have a muzzle break attachment that will thread right onto DTA's threads. I think the stainless one is around $950 and the Ti is around $1200. I have never actually been around one, but they are AI's in house suppressor and by all accounts sound good and shoot better. In my research I have found that SAS seems to be the best bang for your buck with great performance to boot.

You are going to love that rifle.

I'll look forward to visiting DTA at the shot show!
