I am in the process of buying a new rifle and suppressor. I am new to suppressor's so please bear with me.

My plans are as follows. The suppressor will be for a LH bolt action in 223 Remington cartridge. I am probably going to cut the barrel down to 20"---the factory length is 26". IMO this will be too long after I add the suppressor(I am a handicapped hunter and I hunt mostly off my Kawasaki Mule). The primary use forthe rifle will be ground hog hunting. The rifle will probably be shot between 300 and 400 rounds per year.

I would like to buy a reasonably pricerd suppressor, but I honestly do not know how much that is. I have a local dealer who can handle the tansfer for me. He said he would charge me $35 to do the transfer.

I am open to suggestinos as to which one to buy?? Any suggestions??

The transfer dealer said that the major difference in suppressors is whether they can be taken apart or not for cleaning?? Is that correcct?? Thanks, Tom.

Re: Suppressor Help

On a centerfire suppressor there should not be a need to take apart...I would consider the YHM phantom in 30 cal, works real well on the 223 and gives added flexibility should you decide to move up in cal..
reasonably priced and performance is good !

Re: Suppressor Help

First, check with the local dealer to make sure he was talking about the suppressor transfer, because $35 sounds like a rifle transfer price. Class 3 transfers usually run more toward the $100 range.

I'd find a class 3 dealer in the state that's already got the can on hand; that'll save you time in reducing the number of transfers. I'm a big fan of the Shark suppressor. Light due to Ti construction, hearing safe, and screw together for disassembly. Some will say that a centerfire can doesn't need to be taken down for cleaning, but I would still want the ability.

Re: Suppressor Help

Only found one YHM dealer in WV. He does not have it in stock. And it is $175 more-and he has to order it. I love WV, but it is tough sometimes when you need to buy something here. And yes the suppressor transfer fee is $35. Normally firearm transfer fees are $20 here. One guy I buy from does the firearm transfers for no charge.

That shark looks nice but it is out of my price range. This is for a varmint rifle that will never see any rough handling. So indestructible is not a necessary option. Tom.

Re: Suppressor Help

I have gemtech M402 on a 10.5 SBR. It isn't the most quiet, but it is shorter than most and the last I checked retailed for $495. Gemtech is a company which has been around awhile and makes a good product. I think you should be able to find a dealer in WV on the website.

Re: Suppressor Help

IMO Malaga2 is right on when he says get a 30 cal. suppressor. I have a advanced armament 7.62 sd that I use on my 223, 243,308. All my rifles have 16 to 20 inch barrels: when the suppressor is on they are pretty long. It doesn't take very long to screw one on and off though. good luck

Re: Suppressor Help

I would look at AWC for their raider suppressor , its a little pricy but good , and AWC also builds pretty good rifles too. If you are looking for a compact design look at their m-91 break down rifle they can make it with your choice of barrel length. Although this combo might be a budget buster it should last a pretty long time.

Re: Suppressor Help

Check with the guys at Polite Society, they might have what your looking for. A 35 dollar class 3 transfer is cheap and will make the deal easier on your wallet. The gemtech cans are all great, but for a few bucks more you can get into AWC. The thunder trap is a really good 30 cal can. But like STLTAC said it is always better to hear a demo. Good luck.
