Razor Clam Digs are going on around these here parts, uh huh. Love them tasty bastards. Dug'm commercially and for sport and we lose folks every damn year who think that stroll in the dark has no consequences if ya ain't pay'n proper attention. Well, we just lost two in one night literally minutes apart. One on the Long Beach Peninsula around Ocean Park and the other on the other side of the mouth of the Willapa Bay in an area around North Cove.

Anyhow, I get it. You can die just trying to cross the street, but clam digging? We've pushed the limits in skiffs on the Bay heading back and forth to the spits in weather we shouldn't have been in many times. It was stupid. No two ways about it. Just plain stupid. But if you're strolling around in the dark on the edge of the ocean, DURING THE WINTER, you only have like two things to think about. Spotting key holes in the sand and the damn surf. Emphasis on 'surf'.

    Wow. Just wow.

It's not to soon buddy. They've been found n extracted from the pool. It's unfortunate, and would probably make the perfect crime, but this happens more n more it seems. Darwin awards abound during the simplest of events. Leaves me shaking my head. Now when children are swept away because some douche parent isn't paying attention, that gets my 'cockles' up.

Waders will kill you fast if you can’t get out of them, and the neoprene ones bring your feet up and put your head down, all that being said, I love those tasty little bastards and will be out there this weekend....

I hear ya buddy. Females, one 61 and the other 70 as reported. If ya got no clue in the first place of what the hell you're doing, and it's at night, and it's winter time, and you're along a notorious stretch for sneakers, and that stretch is well known for having more rip tides than tide pods, and ya wander off into the surf you're done. Period. It was bad enough out that the Coast Guard couldn't get out there. What's 'that' tell ya?

what is the tide like up there

Been dealing with some 9 foot tides lately with plenty of storm surge both on the ebb and flood. I use this site to schedule my activities.

    http://www.saltwatertides.com/dynamic.dir/washingtonsites.html

I grew up on the water as a kid commercial fishing with my Dad outta Neah Bay and Sekiu. The mouth of the Juan de Fuca Straits can be bad enough, but this water around here off the mouth of the Columbia and Willapa Bay is just plain crazy ass dangerous. Hell, for that matter ya might as well toss in from Coos Bay up to Westport. Treacherous water that will change it's attitude in minutes. I know the Northeast side has their bad shit as well, I'm just saying this stuff changes FAST and if you're over the Bar at some point ya gotta come back.

Ask DirtyD what kind of washing machine this place can be. He knows all to well.

It's not like watching the tide go out real quick and everyone runs down to collect sea shells and then get whacked by a tsunami. Some places have flats and you don't even have to be close at all to the edge of the water to find the key holes. Other places have a sloped beach into the water. Those are the mother fuckers. Some are gradual, some just fall off into the abyss. When you're on the waters edge on those slopes or wading in the water and you bury your clam shovel or gun into the sand and aren't paying attention to Mother Nature she will send a wave in to take the sand out from under your feet, make ya sink and probably lose your balance, then suck your happy ass out to sea while she constantly pounds your ass under with non stop breakers. I like to look at it like diving. The buddy system works if'n your buddy likes ya. :giggle:

Waders will pull you under as fast as a cinderblock tied to your neck, if you get your ass out of them and flip them over they will hold air indefinitely.

Agreed 100 per cent. I carry a big, fast, sharp knife, just in case. I’m old, turned pussy a long time ago and wear a manual Mustang in all but the calmest of river waters. I dont care what anyone else thinks. When my waterlogged, but still breathing carcass washes up on the bank, I figure I’ve been vindicated.

These are 'decent' days. Imagine in "High Winds", driving rain, and in the dark? Even during the day Darwin gets his fill when people don't realize that big ass log laying there or floating along the beach is getting ready to either kill you or destroy you to the point you'll never walk again. I hear people all the time. "C'mon, let's try and jump up on that rock". I've honestly told people, strangers, if you're willing to die today have at it.

Even before the fall of the Soviet Union the Soviets would send life boat crews to train at the NMLBS at Cape D, the boats in that video are 47’ long and I have seen them almost straight up on the face of a wave while crossing the bar in January. My cutter was 213’ long and weighed 1700 tons and sometimes the waves picked us up and we surfed the bar.

That place plays with ships like toys, humans don’t stand a chance.

It's a fucking washing machine and you know damn good and well if ya make it over the top and don't slam into the trough the chances of knot skidding off the backside and flipping are not in your favor. Hella piece of water.

Side Note: This may be my last post before my Ban. But I'm not sorry. See ya when I'm back?

I concur. Grew up on the Oregon coastline and crossed the bars of many of the rivers from Coos Bay to Astoria. It can get rough in a hurry and change fast. You may cross the bar easy peasy and by the time you get back they have small craft advisory and you are in for a hell of a ride on the way back in in just a few hours. The ocean is beautiful, but she is a heartless bitch who will take advantage of a mistake. I just shake my head in awe at the dumb ass tourists who proceed past the posted warnings to go jump on rocks on the jetties or try to play in the surf.

We saw this movie, (our first introduction to a 'bar'(?) ) and definitely though "Wow".

    The Finest Hours

based on a true story. Doesn't have much to do with clam'n but as the thread has evolved into 'more than insane seas'....

I watched that when it came out. Enjoyed it immensely. Great movie based on actual events as stated. Helluva story and I can't imagine what that must have really been like. Amazing.

LMAO That's a big no shitter. Don't forget the occasional idiot's in the 14ft skiffs with a 25 horse kicker out there over the bar on those 'nice' days. Jimmy don't get it. Odds are those slow rollers ya came out on are gondy and the washing machine is on spin cycle. Ain't no Salmon worth a life. Especially when ya can only keep 2. ;)
The river mouths you speak of are EPIC. That area is famous for killing people. It demands respect for sure.

Do they supply free condoms and lube in the ban room? If not Dirty D can hook you up for a price.
