I was having some issues with a 1086 not firing, chased my tail for two days checking and quadruple checking headspace and every other critical measurement. I decided that compared to my other rifles it didnt seem to drop the pin quite as powerfully.

Finally decided to compare the firing pin spring to another of my factory 700 Long action springs, this is what I came up with...

Surgeon up front, factory remington in rear

I threw that spring in and all is well.

Now, I thought maybe they put in a short action spring on accident, so compared that one to one of my SA springs and this surgeon is about 3/8" longer than a factory 700SA spring. Maybe that spring is a high power short action spring? The spring that came in the 1086, when uncompressed and on the firing pin, was the same length as the pin. In other words, the spring ended at the rear of the firing pin, where the factory LA spring was about 3/4" longer than the pin which is what Im used to when assembling a firing pin that you have to compress the spring a shitload before you get the shroud in the tool.

Im going to give them a call, just wanted to see what you guys had to say tonight.

I had the same problem with my 1086 action, I switched primers and hasn't happened again. I thought I might try replacing it and not chance it happening again. I bought one of David Tubbs Remington 700 LA springs, then the rifle wouldn't fire (to light of primer strikes) so I put the stock spring back in. I did notice that Tubbs spring was quite a bit longer then the stock spring that came with my 1086. Let me know what Jerry says, I was going to call him this week.

Just talked to Steve, sounds like I got a short action spring. Although I guess their bolts dont get along well with some Timney triggers. Im not sure exactly which model he was talking about, but said it has a heavy bar in it and drags the cocking piece slowing the pin down. So since this rifle has a Timney, I could have a combination of problems causing this issue. However, it seems its working great now with the factory 700 spring in it, so well see if it has any issues down the road.

Theyre sending a replacement long action spring to me today, Ill compare it and see for sure if it was infact a short action that came in it.
