Glad the boys made it.
Going into that area unarmed is foolish.

Disagree. Both man and bear had free will. One kid saved his teammate. Kids were out in nature, not gang-banging in the streets. They didn't "deserve" a mauling.

Article I read said they were armed and both had bear spray. Attack happened too fast to even draw the bear spray. That area is full of bears no doubt. Always am more tired from vigilance than hiking anywhere around there.
Article I saw didn't mention whether they were or not.
Something seems awry, why didn't second boy draw and dump rounds into the bear?
Why didn't second boy shoot rounds/round into the dirt to distract bear if to close to buddy?

I heard an interview that they had bear spray, not sure about firearms. The group of four had split into two - maybe the other two had firearms. The second guy kicked and pulled the hair of the bear while it was chomping on his friend's arm.
Amazing that thisis the 2d and third attack 've heard about. Although that top one was a Black Bear (more documented black bear than grizzly attacks).
A younger member of my former team, lives in Montana. He was rolled by two yearling Brown Bears, and chased by the mother. The two tackled him, and rolled him down the hill, losing all his gear. His partners saw what was happening and shot one, and the mother. they went back with Fish and Game, but couldn't find them. I'll edit later when I download his photos.

I'm not an expert but it dun't look like a grizzly to me...more like a black bear but what do I know? Always carry.
