Swage or uniform primer pocket?

On my once-fired LC brass, I swaged 200 rounds (with the RCBS swager) before I got my primer pocket uniformer. When I inserted primers in the swaged brass, the primers seated very easily. When I uniformed the pocket alone (using an RCBS uniformer in the Case Prep Center), the crimp was gone, the primer seated easily, but on these, the primer seated just a hair deeper than the ones that were swaged alone.

Should I:

1. Just skip uniforming?
2. Adjust the uniformer and do both?
3. The primer isn't set too deep and I need to stop being so OC about it?

Re: Swage or uniform primer pocket?

Typically the uniformer doesnt remove the crimp, just squares up the bottom. If they are crimped, you gotta swage or you cant get the new primer in there.

That's what I was doing before, swaging alone.

Re: Swage or uniform primer pocket?

For me, swaging seemed to work best. But you have to separate your brass by headstamp or the RCBS doesn't workt too well.

I don't remember if the RCBS uniformer cuts the crimp or not. My uniformer (not RCBS) just cuts the bottom of the primer pocket square.

To me they are two separate operations. You can either use a crimp remover or a swager, then uniform your primer pockets.

I've put the crimp remover in a cordless drill, but sometime scratch the inside of the primer pocket. This makes primer seating a little stiff sometimes. With swaging, primers seat easily all the time if the swager is adjusted properly for the lot of cases.

Re: Swage or uniform primer pocket?

After looking at it again, I am going to attempt to readjust the pocket uniformer so that it cuts shallower and skip the swage if the pocket uniformer can be adjusted. If it cannot be adjusted, I'm going to skip uniforming. The last loads were very good with the brass swaged only. Guess I'll just keep it as simple as possible.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Swage or uniform primer pocket?

The swager is for taking the crimp out.

The purpose of the uniformer is to cut the primer pockets to the same depth so that the firing pin impact is the same for all rounds fired...on non critical ammo it is not that important.

Two different operations with different intent.

True.

Also true.

Another truth.

Indeed, they are normally two different operations, but the uniformer that I am using actually cut the crimp away so I was attempting to do both with one tool versus swaging and following it up with uniforming that would have also cut the crimp had I used it first. Thanks for your assistance.
