I ordered a pair of the new 8x42 Swarovski EL Range binoculars from Cabelas. The box arrived today and when I opened it I found 10x42's instead of the 8x42's. The primary purpose is ranging UKD steel targets out past 1,000 yards and ranging prairie rats from 300 - 1,000 yards.

I ordered the 8x42's over the 10's because I don't believe there is much advantage in 10 power over 8 and I decided to err on the side of field of view and less perceived handshake.

Do any of the luminaries on The Hide have any side-by-side experience with both the 8x42's and the 10x42's to make a recommendation? - What do I do: send them back or shut up and be grateful.

The range finder rocks and the glass is phenomenal ... better than the 7x42 Leica's I have. I never thought I would say that.

Thank you, Good shooting ...

i cant say about the 8x42EL vs the 10X42EL but i would go with the 10X42 this is based upon comparing the Leica version of the same in hunting situations.

I don't think handshake will be issue.

Re: Swarovski EL Range Binoc's - Need some help

I just purchased the 10x42's with rangefinder. They are GREAT! I would not want anything less than the 10 power. Field of view is really good and seeing what you are looking at is really good. I like things up close and personal. I highly recommend keeping the 10x42's! Enjoy.

I would keep the 10x pair they sent you. They are $100 more than the 8X, and I think you will like them more for hunting. I have used 10X Leica geovids bowhunting in thick cover and never felt they were too much.

Personally, I would have 2 choices:

(1) send them back and tell them they made a mistake, or

(2) call them up and tell them they sent me the 10x42's by mistake and I like them just fine, and I would like to know how much more money I needed to send them.

I'm sorry, but honesty has always been a character flaw that I've been cursed with.
Stealing $100 from Cabela's would be no different for me than taking a nickel from a blind beggar.

I certainly agree to give them a call and let them know they shipped the wrong bino's. My past experience is they will most likely say thanks for letting us know, enjoy but they might want you to pay the difference which is still a good deal for you. Honesty always pays off!

Re: Swarovski EL Range Binoc's - Need some help

For that kind of money I would have gone with the 10X to start with, but that is my preference. I have the 10X Geovids and wouldn't want any smaller, especially since they weigh the same as the 8X and take up the same room. Get use to the 10's you'll be glad you did. I would bet that Cabela's customer service won't ask for the extra hunnert, just sayin'...

Re: Swarovski EL Range Binoc's - Need some help

I started out with 8x units, then bought 10x geovids which are similar in weight to your new EL's I don't have problems with too much handshake because of the added weight. you live in colorado wide open territory like I do, I highly highly recommend you stay with 10x. my geovids needed repair so I had to hunt with my 8x nikon backups, I HATED going back to 8x I felt like I couldn't find anything with them after using 10x for so long.

Re: Swarovski EL Range Binoc's - Need some help

I did call Cabelas if for nothing else honesty sake and let them know of the mistake.

I agree with fw707, you have to ask yourself what is your honor and the peace of mind that goes along with it worth ...

The outcome - I was put on hold for a long time and a Cabelas supervisor came back and suggested that we leave it as-is which makes good business sense as it would cost them more than the $100 difference to ship back and forth, re-stock resend ...

Thank you for all of the input. It will interesting to see if hunting with the "lousy" 7x42 Leicas becomes unbearable after using the 10x42's.

Good shooting ...
